I only just realised that internet data still works on 2g networks (yes im a noob). So my question is, are there any advantages of using more than 2g networks for just calls and texts?

The only advantage I see here using 2G is battery life. Other than that is pretty much an absolete protocol. I believe I read somewhere carriers will begin to phase out 2G in favor of 3G and LTE.

In some places (I'm in Michigan for example, and on TMO), 2G also offers a stronger network signal in most locations. I typically keep my phone on 2G unless I need to do some surfing. Less battery drain and stronger signal just makes it the sensible default choice for me.

While it (data) may work on 2G, it will be extremely slow. Fine for downloading text-only emails, but you wouldn't want to wait while it loads a complex web page...
