how do I turn on the calendar alert?

Calendar appointments will vibrate, but will not make any noise. I have set calendar alert and notification to ALERT and have set a ring tone, it used to work, but doesn't anymore and I keep missing appts. this is an S3.

Hello.
Just to be sure: Device - Sound has an S-Planner setting if you use S-Planner (I recently gave up my S2 and can't remember what the stock calendar was on that).

Device - Sound - Volume has a Notification slider.
