New battery not charging?

I got a new phone battery for my cell phone and am trying to charge it. The charging light will not go with the new batter. I check putting in my old battery and the light turned on. Do I need to get another battery? Or do I need to wait a few hours until the light goes on?

Welcome to Android Central! Which phone? It might take a bit of initial charging before things start to respond. Let it sit on a charger for 3-4 hours, then check again. If there's no progress, then the battery is probably defective.
