I have LG 4.4.2 android and cannot get the remove the unlock screen.

The battery was very low and it shut off. When charged suffciently the screen automatically went to having to use my numeric password every time I turn it on. At the same time my tablet started doing the same. I can unlock them but don't want to do so all the time. Especially when the screen saver turns it off when they are not used for a few minutes without shutting them down myself.

Welcome to Android Central! Which devices are they? Go to Settings>Security or Settings>Lock Screen (wherever it is that you select your lockscreen options), and change the screen lock to None or Swipe Only there. If it doesn't let you, go to Settings>Security>Clear Credentials​, then try again.
