Battery in LG Optimus G swells up.

I have an old LG Optimus G phone that I really like but recently the battery swelled up so much that the back of the phone popped loose. I ordered a new battery from Amazon (it had exactly the same numbers etc. as the old battery). I replaced the battery and the phone worked fine for a couple of days and now the battery is puffing up again. I've been careful not to overcharge the phone since the battery was replaced.

That sounds like a short somewhere in the phone. (Even a single shorted capacitor sitting on the battery line can cause that.)
