How can i switch tasks on my android tv box?

I have an android TV box with a remote control. There doesn't seem to be a way of getting into the task switching screen (when normally you could tap the X to close your apps). The box was only cheap and you do you have to stay on top of open apps otherwise it really slows down. I can plug in a wireless keyboard and use alt-tab to bring up the screen and then an Air mouse to click on the X. Does anyone know any slightly less awkward ways of bringing that screen up so I can close down my apps? Thanks
