Change Keyboard Size

I use the default texting app the came with he phone and sometimes when I start a text the keyboard increases to a larger size. I actually prefer the larger size but I can't figure out what causes it to increase, it seems like I just touch a key and it increases. If anyone could help me out I would appreciate it.

It increases size when you turn the phone.

No that's not it. I almost always use the landscape mode, and yes it is larger this way but at times when I start to text the size of the keyboard increases. The keys are larger and it takes up more of the area above the keyboard where the text is shown.
