Pixel 6 (or Pro) vs S22 Ultra

I know you and I have discussed this before, but this is what makes me happy with my P6. Can't see myself back with Samsung until this changes (or my kids get old enough to where it doesn't matter as much).
I completely understand! Mine are now 17 and 14 ... So, pretty much a non factor for me at this point.

Help with decision: Pixel 6 Pro vs. S22 Ultra

My trusty S10+ is struggling to hold battery power and, after three very happy years I'm beginning to think about an upgrade.

Right now the choices that seem to make sense are either the S22 Ultra or the Pixel 6 Pro.

Any thoughts on the relative pros and cons of each of these clearly excellent phones? My priorities, in no particular order, are call quality, speakerphone quality, operating smoothness, battery life and camera quality.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Bingo!!

I'm only a few days in, but I am enjoying this S22U...My only gripe is the shutter lag. Once again, Samsung struggles. But it's not enough for me to switch back to my P6Pro (at least, not yet).

I'm thinking Vacations and my kids sporting events will require a quick Sim swap to my P6Pro or just carry 2 phones. After that is over, back to my S22U....hahaha....Wooo!!

* Beautiful, bright screen
* Auto brightness that doesn't suck
* Face unlock (which is crazy stupid fast)
* Slightly faster FPS with less frequent fail rate. Even though I don't have many issues with my P6P, there's a noticeable difference
* More customizable AOD (I like the "show for new notifications" option)
* I prefer the quick tile layout on the S22U ... Much rather the smaller tiles where I have 6 options on 1st pulldown compared to only 4 huge tiles
* Bixby Routines. I know folks trash Bixby, but Routines is pretty handy (I know there's 3rd party apps where I can accomplish the same things, and likely more, but I'm lazy LOL Having it baked in is just easier)
* S Pen ... Even though I am not a huge user of it, it is nice to have for editing pics, signing documents, marking up screenshots, etc
* Ridiculously fast charging! Using the 30w charger I got when I grabbed the P6P, it charges the S22U incredibly fast. If I'm low I can throw it on the charger for 15-30 minutes or so and it'll top it off plenty
* Better integration with my Galaxy Watch
* Edge panel for having a set of apps quickly open in split view
* The slightly wider form factor makes typing easier for me
* While I do find the camera on the P6P is better, I love all the options and versatility of the Samsung camera. It's really fun to play with some of the features.
* One hand operation + from Good Lock. Love it because I can have navigation buttons and swipe gestures enabled at the same time. Tried some 3rd party apps on my P6P to accomplish this and while they work they pale in comparison
* Built-in double tap to wake and double tap to sleep that works on the lock screen
* The Lock screen music widget

That's about all I can think of ATM

... There's double tap to wake and sleep?!?! That's AMAZING. Uh oh. That's a huge plus for me.

In those situations sometimes it's best to make up an excuse to buy both... keeps you from having the dreaded buyers remorse, keeps you from having to make the tough decision, and is a win-win... except for your wallet ;)

But hey if you use them both then money well spent right? Lol.. yes I'm a terrible corrupter :p

Re: Help with decision: Pixel 6 Pro vs. S22 Ultra

I've read a lot about the S22U and the S21U and I actually think I would prefer the S21U.
P6P is now out of the running because the max screen brightness is a real disappointment. Unusable in bright sunlight.

Any thoughts on where I can get a new S21U at a good price?

For anyone using the S22 Ultra, download "System UI Tuner" from the Play Store. Does this app allow your Samsung S22 Ultra to display hours:minutes:seconds? When I tried the S21U, Samsung was blocking the ability to display seconds. Has that changed?

Would love to test for you, but looks like a lot of the apps won't work (a few I installed crash immediately) and the ones that donwork require root or adb. Sadly I don't have any way to run adb (no computer). Are there any apps you know of that work without requiring root or adb?

"System UI Tuner" downloads from the Play Store and runs natively on my Pixel 6 Pro. I'm able to use it to display "seconds" which are necessary for short term trading when using Interactive Brokers Trader Workstation for Android.

I tried a few and here's what I found:

I use System UI Tuner - Bryan C, and it works perfectly on my P6Pro.
If it won't even open, then the Samsung S22U is of no use to me.
Samsung is apparently still blocking the display of "seconds".
Thanks for checking.

The QuickStar app for GoodLock allows you to reposition the clock, but no option to add seconds. I sent the developer an email requesting it ... Who knows if I'll get a response or if they'll even implement it, but figured it was worth a shot.

Re: Help with decision: Pixel 6 Pro vs. S22 Ultra

Any thoughts on the relative pros and cons of each of these clearly excellent phones? My priorities, in no particular order, are call quality, speakerphone quality, operating smoothness, battery life and camera quality.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

I currently have both the S22U and Pixel 6 Pro. Had the 6 Pro since October 2021, had the S22U since February.

On the items you mentioned:

- Call quality/reception: Galaxy S22U is much, much better. I was one of the unfortunate people where the December update on the Pixel 6 Pro pretty much killed my reception. It could barely stay connected, if I had reception calls would regularly drop out or the call would be really hard to hear. The January update improved it a lot and it would stop cutting calls but reception was still sketchy in places where I never used to have an issue and calls still weren't clear. When I got the S22U, I put the same sim card into the Galaxy, boom, no issues with reception, phone calls work fine, never had a drop out or sound issues etc.

Speakerphone quality - Not much a difference between the two. I don't use speaker phone much at all so to me they were both fine.

Operating smoothness - I have to give it to Samsung now. One UI is faster and smoother than the Pixel launcher for me. I'd get weird hangs and lag sometimes on the Pixel, which I just don't get on the Galaxy. I used to like the Pixel UI more, but with Android 12 there are some strange design decisions to the point just find One UI on the Galaxy more pleasant and just faster to use.

Battery life - easily the Galaxy. I'm getting an extra 2-3 hours screen time for my usage on the Galaxy. Pixel just has average battery life for me. Could be a combination of the reception issues and the Tensor processor running hot. But I'm definitely finding battery life on the Galaxy better.

Camera quality - Probably a wash for me, but I guess if I had to pick, I'd say I prefer the Pixel a little more than the Galaxy. The Pixel does better in lower light and with moving objects, other than that, they're pretty much the same. The Galaxy however has better video recording.

Some other aspects of the phone you might want to consider:

- Screen. The Galaxy has a substantially better screen than the Pixel 6 Pro. The LTPO2 display and the brightness it can hit is insane. I always felt the Pixel had a dull screen and the Galaxy looks like it gets twice as bright. I only need to keep it at medium brightness indoors, whereas I had to crank the Pixel to max and it still wasn't that bright.

- Fingerprint scanner - again another blowout win for the Galaxy. The ultrasonic sensor is lightning fast, extremely accurate and consistent. The three things that the Pixel 6 fingerprint scanner aren't. When you're unlocking your phone 100+ times a day, the last thing you want is the unlocking mechanism to be poor.

Imo even if the Pixel it had 0 bugs, it would be a good phone, but I don't think it'd be a great phone. The screen, fingerprint scanner, battery life, no face unlock and other unusual design choices make it not worth purchasing when you're comparing it to the Galaxy S22 Ultra. The Galaxy has its own issues, but they're not as serious/pervasive as reception issues on fingerprint scanner issues, dim display etc.

But that's just my opinion. If you can, try using both phones before you make a decision. You might really love the Pixel and prefer that, and that's great. But if you ask me, I think the Galaxy is a much better phone and that's without even mentioning the S-pen which I don't really use, but I know some people really love it.

Re: Help with decision: Pixel 6 Pro vs. S22 Ultra

Wonderful summary. Pretty much squares up with what I've been able read in multiple sources.
So I decided on the Samsung but as I was looking at the S21U and the S22U I decided I preferred the S21U. I prefer the flatter screen and less boxy looks and the 128gb version comes with 12gb of ram vs the S22U 8gb. And the screen has even slightly better resolution and ppi. Have no interest in the S-pen so that wasn't a concern.

So just go out and get the S21U, right? Not so easy. There were none to be found other than used or grey market without a warranty. Verizon website has them listed as not available, so, in a last ditch effort, I called their 800 number and they actually found one at one of their corporate stores.
Will be picking it up later today.

Re: Help with decision: Pixel 6 Pro vs. S22 Ultra

I think that it is apples and pears though. For the extra £400 I would expect all those improvements. It is like comparing a Ferrari to a Kia. You aren't going to expect the same level of comfort in a Kia as you would in a Ferrari. You just aren't. If you can afford to spend the extra on the S22U then get that. If your budget runs lower the 6 Pro is a lovely phone and I don't have the issues you are saying you have had. It is like comparing an iPhone Pro Max with a 6 Pro. Again you are talking about a Rolls Royce and a Kia and expecting the same results.

Sorry but it has to be said. Pixels are budget flagships. They are priced that way and marketed that way. I would compare the 6 Pro to a OnePlus costing £900 not a phone costing £300-500 more.
