Google Now on lock screen

I have the Google now widget on my lock screen but it doesn't update on its own. Or, I should say, it will only show one of my cards until I swipe left and then back. And tapping on the one card being shown, before I do the swiping, gives me the "add a widget" plus sign. It's almost like it's just not active. Any ideas?

I just have it in the regular place as my launcher but I never see when it updates or changes. It adapts to how you may interact with it but it's slow, not like a weather widget.

I'm not even talking about constant updates just giving me all the cards I normally see like my schedule and traffic and stocks. In order to see more than one card, I need to swipe.
