Text alert bug?

I sent a text message to two contacts today (used the same window with contacts separated by a comma) and I received a reply that would not show on my phone but I did receive an alert in the alert pane. When I clicked on the alert it takes me to compose a new message and will not clear the alert. I have pressed clear to remove all alerts and it goes away but any time I receive a text message now I receive the same preview message/alert from that previous person no matter who texts me but I will receive the correct text in my messages. I have turned the phone off and back on, removed the battery (while phone was off) and even reprogrammed the phone by *228 to no avail. Anyone have any suggestions other than a factory reset? I'm tech savy but I'm new to the Android platform.
