When I'm in my wife's Subaru Forrester and connected to the car media via Bluetooth, I have to swipe first, then put my thumb on the fingerprint scanner to log in. Is anyone else having this issue? I should be able to simply place my thumb on the reader and unlock my note 5.

I don't believe so, I'm not sure how to do that.

Go to Settings>Lock screen and security>Secure lock settings>Smart lock and while in range of / connected to your vehicle's Bluetooth select Trusted devices and add it. This way whenever your connected to that Bluetooth your lock screen security will be bypassed. I use this with my Gear 2, works great. The lock screen security will resume when you're out of range of the Bluetooth or the Bluetooth is disconnected for any other reason.
