8890 vs 820... disappointing

Cpu is a lot more powerful on the exynos but gpu is a lot more powerful on the snapdragon. Videos show that the exynos runs a lot faste though, loading games, loading apps, and day to day use. The 820 looks to run as fast of even slower than the exynos 7420 for some reason. Not sure why because its a lot more powerful

What you have to remember is the snapdragon kryo chip in the 820 is a 2x2 big little configuration. The exynos is a 4x4 big little configuration.

So having half the cores the snapdragon still puts up 90% of the performance the new exynos does. The only occasion where the exynos will smoke the 820 is in heavily multithreading situations. Otherwise the snapdragon 820 can do single threaded tasks much faster then any exynos.

Doesnt the 8890 only run 4 cores at once ? And is the 8890 running all cores on geekbench ? Because theres a big difference in cpu multiscore between them being the 8890 higher.

May or may not be true. I know on the original big.little exynos cpu's they could only run one set at a time. I also know the folks at hard kernel managed to get all 8 cores to run together on a later revision of the cpu.

My point though still stands that from a computational power perspective the snapdragon 820 with the kryo cores will kill the exynos when comparing single threaded performance. When comparing something that can take advantage of the multiple cores the exynos will be faster.

It is much easier to take full advantage of 2 cores over 4.

Think of this analogy when comparing the two. Each cpu gets 2 pieces of work. The 820 completes it 3 hours. That same work would take let's say 5 hours on the exynos. The 820's two faster cores are fully utilized and complete the work as fast as possible. The exynos has 2 cores sitting idle it can't take advantage of.

Now you double that to 4 units of work. The 820 now takes 6 hours because it has to run 2 at a time. The
Exynos now takes full advantage of all its performance cores and completes all 4 in the same 5 hours.

The point to all this is it depends on the apps and kind of stuff running. It has been shown many times that fewer faster cores can very easily be better then slower many cores. If most of what us users do only hits 2 cores at most then the kryo is actually the better performing chip in that scenerio. I would say that it is probably better unless the user does tasks that can fully utilized 3 of the exynos cores.

Thanks for the explanation. Its still very wierd how the adreno 530 is 56 percent more powerful but games are actually lagging and dropping frames compared to the mali t880 or whatever it uses
