A big Nexus 6 might be a big mistake for Google

The 75% disapproval of a 6" phone in the AC poll is huge in my opinion.

I'd have to believe Google is fully aware a 5.9 inch device isn't going to sell as well or in as high a volume as a 5 inch device does... a Phablet is a specialized market but at the same time a growing market dominated by Samsung for the most part.... the 75% disapproval on AC is interesting.... I looked around at several different sites who also have polls and seen anywhere from 55 (against) 45 (For) to 75 - 25......

I think a 5.9 inch Nexus will sell pretty good.... Not 10 million the first weekend good but I'd venture to guess they will be "Sold Out" within a few hours of launch.... Granted "Sold out" could just be 10,000 devices depending on what Google estimates and puts up front orders for.....

iPhone 6 Vs. iPhone 6 Plus sales: 6 Plus seems far behind | BGR

Just going by web traffic data....thats all. Remember the 10 million number is combined. I agree tho it being back ordered, supply shorted plays a factor too. We will see in a year or 2 if many do want the bigger iPhone.

Btw...lower than expected sales does not equal miserable sales. Just....lower than expected.

That BGR article is full of WTF. I'm trying to make sense of these statements...

But new statistics from Chitika indicate that people may have been jumping the gun because it’s possible that the low early production volumes of iPhone 6 Plus are the reason for its relative scarcity compared to the smaller iPhone 6.

According to Chitika, three days after the launch of the new models, the iPhone 6 made up 1.6% of the internet traffic volume generated by all iPhones and the iPhone 6 Plus was responsible of just 0.2% of Internet traffic. This means that the iPhone 6 generated a whopping eight times more web traffic than its massive sibling.

Could it be that the iPhone 6 Plus is just too big for mainstream iPhone fans and that it will become a relatively small niche product and that the cheaper iPhone 6 is dominating shipments?

So let me get this straight. The iPhone 6+ is scarce not because of demand but because Apple's production capacity is lower than for the iPhone 6. This is backed up by web traffic data. Ok, I can buy that. But in what world does "scarce due to supply limitations" equal "low demand" and "niche product"? Only in BGR's world, apparently.*

Note that I'm not a fan of phablets myself. I have no interest in buying a 5.9" Nexus 6. I do, however, recognize that a lot of people like them, and ignoring this market is as effective as sticking your head in the sand and pretending they don't exist. Articles, analysts, and bloggers that disparage phablet popularity come across as fools.

*And this is yet another affirmation for me of why BGR is junk and I miss nothing by not reading them.

I wonder how many people will gauge early sales success of the new models, or theorize on how much more data they will use, based on that % of overall iPhone Internet traffic, and then wonder if they will take into account the portion of that which is the bulk amount of 'one-time' use associated with downloading of initial OS updates and applications...

I don't worry at all about the "usability" of a large 6" screen. I don't worry at all about trying to type one-thumbed because I generally always use my phone two handed just because it's always easier and more accurate to type with my index finger on Swype. I also don't worry at all about holding a giant phone up to my head to talk...I hate talking on the phone anyway, so I generally try to limit my phone use.

No...none of that concerns me at all when we talk about a 6" Nexus. What concerns me entirely is portability. Just sticking the dang thing in my pocket becomes a real problem. It's such a simple thing, but right now I have a Galaxy S3 (man am I ready for an upgrade!) and even THAT feels big in my front jeans pocket. I'm really just not even going to consider a device that is not physically practical for me. And yes, I said "for me"...to each their own...but I suspect I'm not the only one who has an upper limit for phone size. I don't honestly know what my limit is, but I DO know that 6" is beyond it.

The vast majority of folks whining about larger phones have never used one on a regular basis. Instead, they check one out at Best Buy for five minutes, deem it too large and awkward for them, and then get on the Internet and tell everyone how large phones are terrible. There are exceptions to this I'm sure. But most people who use Notes and the like will tell you that they got over any "awkward" initial period, accustomed themselves to the size fairly rapidly, and now would never go back to a phone 5" or less.

...

Funny, they tell me the same thing about broccoli.

You see the "bigger is always better" trend in a variety products... cars, watches, televisions or whatever. We've been through this before with phones, remember the "bag phone"? Bigger meant longer battery life and better (3W radio) coverage, but folks got tired of lugging those things around long before the battery life and range of handheld phones matched that of bag phones.

Will that trendy new vehicle fit in my garage? Must I have my shirts tailored so one cuff is larger than the other? Should I remodel my house just to fit that 80" television?

I know for a fact that lugging around a 7" device (e.g. Nexus7) on a day to day basis is woefully impractical for myself, so I expect that we're approaching the threshold of practicality in phones for an ever increasing number of folks. Besides, we're not all the same physical size or wear the same types of clothes, nor do many of us carry a purse or wear a fanny pack... so the tediousness of lugging around a gigantic phone isn't the same for everyone.

One size fits all? Hardly.

Exactly why I stated it was a problem for me. I understand there are plenty of folks interested in a gigantor phone. Thing is, there's all this hype about the next Nexus device every year and the last three have had mass appeal and had a lot of buy-in. I don't think a 6-inch screen will have the appeal to as many folks has the two or three previous Nexuseseseses have had. Whether Google and its partner care about that is something I don't really have a comment on.

Prediction: It sells just as well as the Nexus 5.

I say that it will not sell as well as the 5, but will sell better than a lot of people think. There are so many people saying there is no way they are getting it because of the size. But after it comes out and is a hot phone, many of those will jump on it I think...

For all the polls showing 60 - 70% of the people think it's too big and won't buy it.............................. I'd still somewhat agree with you.... I bet it sells way better than expected.... Will really depend on price.. if they can keep it down around $400 or less they will fly off the shelf.. If it gets up in the $450 - 500+ range maybe not so much...

I don't think it'll be ~$400 but it'd be fantastic if you could get a brand new nicely spec'd 6" phone from a reputable source with an established history like Google's OEMs for that price. I think a lot of people that thought they'd not want a 6 incher would jump all over that and Google would have a hard time meeting demand.

Completely agree with the size not being a usability problem. I solved the front pocket problem for my Note 2 by extending one of my front pockets. I added 1.5" to the size of the interior pocket and problem solved.

I don't know ANYONE who wants a small (<4.7" phone) phone due to size but some will settle because of cost.

Do you talk to a lot of women about phone size preference? There are two women that I talk to often that don't like larger phones. One still uses an iPhone 4 and is torn on what to do for an upgrade because the new phones are too big for her. There are other women that I run into but are not close to who have told me that they like smaller phones, with around 4.3" being their upper limit on desirable size.

My opinion on the size is that no, I don't like phones or tablets in the 6-8" range. Those devices are too big for me to hold and use with one hand, but awkward to use with two hands. I wanted to like the Nokia 1520, but ended up not buying it because I couldn't find a comfortable way to hold it in store.

Yes, I initially thought that the original Note was too big when I saw the pictures of the international version but when I saw the US version in person, I had to have it immediately. I don't think that this will transfer over to devices over six inches for me, though. I'll try the Nexus 6 in-store before I buy it.

I don't think it's a woman/man thing. It's a phone geek thing. My hubby is still using a small feature phone. Doesn't even want text. If you love phones, you enjoy trying new phones, new apps, etc. I had to take a week to get used to my Note 2 and if I decide on the Nexus 6, it will take time to get used to also.

They still sell the iPhone 5s...or is that too large? The also still sell the S3 Mini and S4 Mini...or are those too large as well? I know lots of women but all of them are pretty techy. My wife is not technical at all, at all (almost embarrassingly non-technical, bless her little Brazilian heart) and the iPhone 6 appeals fine to her though she actually chose to get a 5s yesterday because she didn't think the 6 was worth $100 more. She won't be caught dead with anything android, poor thing. I know a female F-16 pilot and she loves large phones.

As mentioned above, I don't really think it's a man vs. women thing.

Exactly. And I do fully expect the big screen devices to continue to sell well through multiple product cycles (just like HDTV's keep getting bigger, but volume tapers as the sizes increase). I'd probably be all-in on the giganto phone thing if I hadn't stuffed my Nexus7 in a pocket and lugged it around on numerous occasions. As was discussed in another thread, I'd be much more amenable to a phone with a massive screen if it was a folder of some kind that didn't require the display to be full-size to use it and for transport.

I do wonder with all the hate for a large screen nexus,if it arrives at a 349 pricepoint for 64GB (just like the OnePlus) would that change the majority's mind?
