Adjustments, tips and tricks to maximize Battery Life on Samsung Galaxy S6/edge

For all you guys getting 6+ hours of battery I'm curious as to what browser you're using. And if you're using chrome are you using the merge tabs and recent apps option?

Posted with my shiny s6

I'm using both, default Samsung Browser for browsing this and other forums and Chrome for everything else, reason of this is that for a long time now Chrome has been very laggy browsing this and other forum in Full Desktop View, I saw that it was a lot better with the default browser and has been using it this way for quite some time now. I still use Chrome for the rest of pages because I like to be able to sync simultaneously with all my devices.

First thing I do when setting chrome is to turn off the Tabs via the Recent apps, never liked the idea and the only time I tried it just hated it.

-auto brightness with lowest setting (usually I use auto brightness with 50-100%)

I don't get how people are doing this. How do you set it to Auto-Brightness yet specify the brightness range? And how do you see the specific percentage amount? My S6 only has a sliding bar that doesn't show a percentage, but people here including the OP mention using a 15-20% brightness setting indoors. Are you estimating the percentage?

And toggling "Auto-Brightness" to On take full control away from the user. On my Nexus 5 Google had an "Adaptive-Brightness" which you could set a range...

I use an estimate of what looks like 25% on the screen brightness toggle most of the time. Use Auto brightness at full brightness only when the sunlight is so intense that I need to change it.

Try installing your apps back one at a time outside of safe mode and see how it affects your battery life to see which ones you can keep on your phone and which ones drain the battery.

To the person asking about browsers I noticed that chrome used a ridiculous amount of battery so I stopped using it altogether. I'm still trying to find a browser as my permanent one but currently I'm using Firefox

I have been wondering about this for ages whether chrome is a battery guzzler, I'm going to change to Firefox to see if it helps. What I really would like is a browser that can convert display webpages white text on black bg, is that possible?

I really liked a browser call UC browser. It allowed you to switch between night mode and day mode

Hey razza I did what u suggested courtesy of Samsung, but when I went into safe mode literally none of the apps I installed showed up am I missing the point?

No that just means that all of the apps you have installed are third party apps. I suggest you do what I did. I deleted any that I didn't want or need out of the ones that didn't show up in safe mode and then I gradually reinstalled them to see which of them made a difference in my battery life by being on my phone. By doing this my phone increased from 4 hours to over 6 hours of screen on time. This will eventually show you which apps could be causing the drain. For example I discovered that the problem behind my battery drain was the weather channel and avg anti virus. Also twitter and Facebook. I uninstalled Facebook at one point and used the browser. However I have since installed greenify on my phone and now whenever I am not using Twitter and Facebook I put them into hibernate. Let me know if any of this helps you :)

I have finally isolated the app that was keeping the phone awake and draining the battery (am not sure whether it was also causing the GPSD thing as it has disappeared entirely after removing this rogue app) .in my case it was the keyboard AI.TYPE app. beautiful n functional as it is have done away with it

All the Toggles are there for a reason, like I mentioned above, you have a smartphone, but letting all the features and options on all the time is a bad idea, the toggles help you turn on/off them in a second, why waste resources and battery on something you won't need for the moment? here is how I always have them.

Just to clarify, but are you saying that having more toggles active in the Quick Settings uses more battery power? Because I can't see how that could matter, and I notice that you only have several toggles active.

I can't clearly understand your question, but I'm not saying that having more toggles active in the quick settings per se is what causes the battery drain, it's what you are leaving on with those toggles what causes most of the drain, if that make sense to you.

It's not the same having 4 toggles on, with basically no impact to the battery life than having just Location on with Full reporting and tracking, plus having the Brightness at 100% all the time.

Well here are my latest stats. This was with fairly light use as you can see I only managed 2.5 hours screen on time. Unplugged at around 730 am, and dead by 730 pm

This was after doing a factory reset, clearing cache, and performing most of the tips here, including the brightness being at 20% most of the day. I notice that Google Keep seems to be acting up, especially since I didn't even open the app today. I should also note that i was connected to a Motorola 360 using Android Wear the entire day.

I do have Google Location Services enabled because I use Google Now through my smart watch. Most of the day was spent on t-mobile LTE, however about 4 hours was on WiFi.

Is it normal for the phone radio to factor so high?

If your cell signal was not good, then phone radio may be that high.

For the rest, Bluetooth and Android wear gets its toll, on the weekends without my Andrid wear on all day I get at least 1 hour more of SoT with basically same usage.

I'm using Location for the past 2 weeks but in Power saving modes, wifi and cell only, it hasn't affected anything as I have Location History off, but if you use Location on any of the other modes with GPS, plus have Location History on, sorry, but that will be your average SoT usage, that combination actually without the ability of turning off location reporting is devastating not just for our phones but all the other Android devices with latest Google play services on them.

I still have Google now cards with location history off, you should try turning it off and see if you still get what you expect plus it will save you a lot of battery.

Erasat can you explain something to me that is confusing me?

My gsam battery monitor is saying that my phone averages 6 hours of screen on time but in brackets it says the max is 5h 47 minutes. This baffles me for a couple of reasons. The first being there have been two occasions where I have gotten over seven hours of screen on time so shouldn't it have this number? But also it confuses me that it's saying the maximum amount is lower than the average. I STILL can not figure this out

Sorry, but no I can't, and that's why I stopped using it, always too confusing, it serves a purpose when you have issues with your battery but until I see that it gets easier to understand or at least not so confusing I'm not planning to use it again.

Lol thanks for the answer. It's nice to know I'm not the only one confused by it. Just thought if anyone would have any idea it would be you lol

I'm still trying to figure out how to avoid the standby battery drain. I noticed that with the screen off and WiFi off I only lose about 1% every 2hrs. The problem is, I have to manually toggle the WiFi on and off which is annoying.

Is there a way to automatically turn off WiFi when the screen is off unless it is plugged in?
