Android 2.3 Gingerbread EI22 latest build WITH IMAGE

Re: Android 2.3 Gingerbread EG22 latest build

Anytime you feel like your ready to take a shot at it Ted, let me know and we can walk you through it.
Is there a standard quick root built for the EG22 yet i.e. stock ROM but with root?

Re: Android 2.3 Gingerbread EG22 latest build

yes Paul, I would love to take a crack at it. I believe I can 'Odin 'which isn't rooting but will accommodate GB. I want the minimum reversible path.

Ted I will get you some instructions.

First go to the link below.

[leak]EG22 IS LIVE - xda-developers

They have some very basic and simple instructions there to download and install the package. The Odin tar file is big, well over 200 meg so be prepared to grab a bite to eat and wait awhile for it to download.

Once you get it downloaded they have provided you with a password, "samfirmware.com" this is needed when you go to EXTRACT or UNZIP the file you downloaded, it will prompt you asking for a password.

Follow the instructions as said, if you have any questions please feel free to ask and I will give you a hand. Grab the files, get them all downloaded and Odin loaded up and ready, and if you feel up to it then go for it, once you press start on Odin it should only take a few minutes to flash and if all works out you will be rebooting into Gingerbread.

One thing they mention for step one to enter download mode. This is done by turning off your device completely, then open your keyboard and press and hold " 1 " down then press and hold power button. This will bring you to a screen Yellow Android Guy shoveling. Then start the Odin program on your computer. Next plug in your device via cable, you will see a section that says ID:COM and it should light up YELLOW signaling that your connected. Once that happens follow the rest of the instructions in the link I provided.

They also have "mirrors" links for the same file further down in the OP of that thread in case the first one is real slow or down.

Hey, if you want, you can go for a rooted version of that ROM because it's exactly the same steps.

Thanks guys, there's a learning curve here so tell me, what is Odin and how does it differ from rooting. With Odin would I be able to delete bloatware? I think I will try it this weekend. Just too busy during the week to give it the focus and attention I need.

ODIN is JUST a tool run on the computer. It was leaked from Samsung and used as a "multi loader" (have up to 8 epics you want to update at one time?, this is the tool for you!). It's most basic function is to push data to the phone when it's in "download" mode (from OFF, hold down the physical "1" key and press "power"). From ODIN, one can push full rom files (leaked or official), or partial items (such as a recovery module like ClockworkMod, or a custom kernel).

Odin will get your phone back to stock, or send it down the "custom rom" route if you want it to. From ODIN I would install the ClockworkMod 3.1.xx Purple. Once you got that, the possibilities are endless of what you can do.

ClockworkMod won't give you root either. Think of it as another tool, but built INTO the phone. But it will give you the power to make full backups of your phone, install rooted kernels, or just the SU file to give your otherwise stock phone root abilities.

What's wrong with that? Paul is right.

Odin is the flashing utility that was leaked by Samsung way back. Its used to flash a device's OS or kernel and modem.

Dependng on the package your flashing it could give you a complete stock os or a modified os.

There is actually two versions available you can flash. The complete stock, unrooted version or you could go with the rooted versions (one is deodexed for ability to flash themes, etc) and the other is simply odex (similar to stock but still rooted) you can do things like remove bloat and use wireless tethering. With either rooted version you would be able to remove bloat, use wireless tethering, make use of backup programs.

If it was me Ted I would pick the deodexed/rooted version and be done. It will be stock, rooted and give you the ability to flash anything mod or theme speaking that comes along. The installation process is no different than flashing complete stock unrooted GB.

FYI the removal of GB on your device once it goes official release is the same no matter what your running. Odin again except flashing a stock version of Froyo EC05 or EB13 package.

Anymore questions Ted, just ask.

Re: Android 2.3 Gingerbread EG22 latest build

Hey guys,

I've been sticking with SRF waiting for the custom GB roms to come out, but I'd kind of like to give this one a try. Guess I'm getting anxious... plus I'm stuck down in Mexico and I want Skype video ;-).

So, quick question: if i update my CWM first and make a backup, then follow the instructions for installing the deodexed/rooted version of this... if I want to go back to where I am now, can I just restore my backup in CWM, or will I need to Odin back to some previous state first?

What has me wondering is that SRF is EXT4, and I assume this leak is RFS right? So would I need to Odin back to something else before restoring my SRF backup?

Thanks for any input...

Yes you can update to the new CWM purple. Then enjoy GB. When you want to go back I tried doing this once already and got hung up at the Sammy screen when I restored my in this case (Bonsai) back up. I'm guessing it is because the file system is formatted in RFS to run GB then your trying to go back to EXT4/SRF or Bonsai, whatever backup.

I think a work around would be using the following package to flash in CWM to convert back to EXT4 from RFS then you can restore your old EC05 backup.

I know Odin isn't needed because when it hung up at the Sammy screen I was able to boot into CWM and wipe everything and reflash Bonsai from scratch and start over.

Its worth a shot, the link is below...

[ACS][CWM 3.0.25+]Rfs2Ext4 and Ext42Rfs **UPDATED 7/27 (xda developers)

Rememeber..

1. Flash the new CWM purple.
2. Make your SRF/EC05 backup
3. Flash the deodexed GB and enjoy.
4. When your ready to return to EC05, from CWM, wipe everything.
5. Flash the RFS to EX4 conversion package
6. Then restore your SRF/EC05 backup.

If it works then excellent! If not, worst case situation you will have to wipe and flash a fresh SRF or EC05 based ROM and start from scratch without using your backup.

BTW, if you could report back on this if it works I would appreciate it.

Re: Android 2.3 Gingerbread EG22 latest build

Can anyone confirm that Skype video works on GB?

Skype from Market does not work for EPIC 4G. Search for the modified SKYPE version here or in XDA, it works perfectly fine in GB (EF02 or EG22) for Video calls, I have had some freezing issues from time to time but in general Video calls works just fine :) also using Root Talk you will have Video conferencing through Google Talk (tested in EF02 and EG22)

Any GPS fixes yet for EG22? Mine is pretty much useless but I think everything else is working just about perfect. I've tried both odexed and deodexed roms.

Re: Android 2.3 Gingerbread EG22 latest build

I am still running 2.2 DK28 What features does GB offer that DK28 doesn't?

I have been running DK28 since it was 1st leaked and have no problems with my EPIC.

What are the advantages of flashing GB?
Do I have to Odin all the way back to 2.1 before flashing GB?

Thanks in advance for any help.

GB basically has better power management and brings better app compatablility. It also points the battery upwards if you care about that. As for flashing it. All you have to do is put it on the root of your sd, boot into recovery, make a backup and wipe everything 3x, then select apply update.zip, then go back and choose reboot system and let it boot up. It will take a little bit longer then normal to boot up but you should have no problems.

Re: Android 2.3 Gingerbread EG22 latest build

Does GB fix the cell radio problem where you used to have to toggle Airplane Mode on and off to keep the phone awake from searching for a signal? the good folks at XDA for some reason refuse to answer this question I've posed several times now.

Re: Android 2.3 Gingerbread EG22 latest build

I chickened out and didn't install GB. It should be out in a week or so. Anyone having trouble with the latest build? Still EG22?

EG22 has been 99% solid. I have an issue where I can't change the roaming settings (which seems to be just ME, and likely with how I restored my data folder). There is some debug code in EG22 still, so I think there will be one more version. Sources (well, samfirmware.com) says the Epic is getting another rom mid August. They didn't say if it was the "official", or yet another leak. But it sure seams that this latest leak was good enough to roll out to the general userbase.
