I'm pretty sure they say "Charging Slowly" just to differentiate from rapid charging, which will never happen when plugged into a USB-A port.

That does not explain the differences in charging rates between the two phones in the exact same use scenario.

I'll have my replacement 3xl Monday and I'll let you guys know if I have the same problem. I use AA every day with navigation, calls, texting, maybe a little streaming and my battery gains. How much? I'm not sure but it does always gain. I drive 4 hours to Delaware to visit my daughter with nav and everything working hard and I'm at 100%when I park. That cannot change as I would have a big problem. I'll be back.....

Looking forward to your findings, bkrickles.

Are you using the "official cable" or something else in the car?

I get my pixel 3 Thursday, my 30% in 1 hour charge is reference to my current iPhone 7+ which im pleased as a charging rate. Now when I do get my phone and only get let’s say 10% charge in 1 hour commute that’ll be disappointing

Ah gotcha'. Thank you for the clarification.

OK, I'm not sure what's going on with your phones, but I am not having any charging issues with my Pixel 3 XL.

I went out to dinner tonight with some friends. I left my house at 1834, my phone was at 88% charged. I arrived at the restaurant at 1856, I was at 100% charged, and on the way I was using navigation, and playing music with my phone through Android Auto.

The trip took 22 minutes. That works out to at least .54% per minute charge rate. I say at least because I was at 100% when I arrived, and I have no way of knowing how soon in my trip the phone was completely charged.

It may be because I am using a cable from Google, but I don't know if that's the reason, or the only reason. But it seems to me that getting a cable from Google would be a logical troubleshooting step for those who are having charging issues.

I am happy to hear your AA is working as it should, and thank you for posting your experience. It very well could be the cable, but I still cannot get my head around why a P2XL would work just fine but a P3XL will not with the same car, port and cable.

Which is more important to you, having your phone work or knowing why it doesn't work? Why not get it working, then you can ponder the reasons why at your leisure?

Systematic troubleshooting involves identifying the root cause of an issue and then determining a course of action to resolve said issue. If it is as simple as a cable, then so be it. But I suspect that is not the case, as others are having issues when using the OEM cable.

Spec wise, the OEM cable is a simple USB 2.0 cable. Unless Google is pulling some voodoo to make their cables somehow magically different than any other certified cable out in the marketplace then I cannot see how it makes a difference.

Then again, I could be completely wrong. I would love to be proved incorrect!

The important difference is more likely the USB-C specs of the cable rather than USB 2 vs USB 3. The USB-C specs are pretty involved, and we already have history of cable manufacturers playing fast and loose with those specs and causing problems.

Still, I had tried cables that were Benson approved when I was having problems initially with my P2XL. Nevertheless, switching to a Google cable fixed all my AA problems. And now I have no problems with my P3XL using the same cable.

You can keep up your careful analysis if you like, whatever makes you happy.

Understand on the Benson approved cables when that was an issue. I went through that early on with the P2XL & AA. You very well could be right; but as stated, others are still having issues even with the OEM cable.

If it plays out to be unequivocally the fact that a OEM cabe MUST be used, then I am ok with that. However, it is not without merit that Google has had charging implementation issues previously.

Update: I received my Google cable yesterday. AA now works. I don't understand it as the old cable worked with my pixel without issue.

I did experience the volume control issue. It doesn't always not work so I need to gather more information.

Also, even with the Google cable the phone charges slowly; which isn't ideal to say the least.

Finally, the non Google cable works to transfer files from my PC. I wonder if it is a current issue that causes AA not to work.

Thank you for the update, jmac0731. In your use case as well as mine, I would say AA "connects", but not "works". While it is able to communicate with the head unit, the "charging slowly" issue is a dealbreaker for me.

We can also observe that the OEM cable does not fix the charging issue, but may fix connectivity issues is some cases.

On the charging issues, has anyone tried dual charging? Using a wireless in-car charger along with a plug in the USB charger.
