Android Messages and iMessage reactions

All good. It was a nit-picky thing from me anyhow.

It actually raises the question of why doesn't Apple just properly show the reactions for iPhone users. Maybe the same reason why they don't have a single color for all bubbles?

...and that some of the US carriers have basically adopted to have users need to rely on Google's Messaging App.

To be honest, I am not following it as closely as others and I am not sure of all the details. However, if things keep going the current way they are heading with RCS, it just seemed to me that Google could essentially end up doing the same (when we later look back at it) as if everyone would have just moved to iMessaging.

RCS is kind of a mess... Google integrated it themselves because carriers were dragging their feet.

In my experience, mixed SMS leads to everyone getting the written out reactions, not just those on Android.

I didn't realize that.

I have a family thread with 3 android users & 8 iPhone users. The thread gets so cluttered with the written out reactions. Who knows which image someone 'liked' as there is no indication of the pertinent image. If I need go back through the thread to find something someone posted, I grab a snack cause it's going to take awhile.

I had no idea that the iPhone family members were getting the same clutter. With that in mind, I'm surprised they even use the reactions on our family thread.

Thanks for the info!

If this feature ever rolls out, it'll be ironic that Android users will see iMessage reactions, but iPhone users won't!

But Google also doesn't know which image a user reacted to. I recall reading somewhere that they'll just default to putting the reaction with the most recent image. That could get awkward if someone sends a picture from a funeral, and then someone else ""laughs at" a funny image sent earlier. :)

No problem!

Yeah, been thinking the same thing. And a good point about which message is being responded to when messages multiple messages are coming in.

I find the smarter participants in some of the multi-user SMS/MMS groups figure it out quite quickly, to not use the "liked" and other "reaction" button features, in terms of knowing that the "chat" isn't being conducted on something like FB Messenger, What'sApp, or some other similar "Chat App". Then again, it's also clear that many actually have no idea about the differences and lots of Apple users think iMessaging is "text messaging" .

In theory, the RCS standard should discuss how each of the implementers need to deal with this sort of thing. Maybe in theory the "likes" and "laughed at" should just be sent as generic "liked image" or "laughed at message". However, I am sure Google or Apple wouldn't find that acceptable enough of an experience for their users and they'll do something specific that will work, only for with their space of users.

Came across this article..
Interesting article.

I also found this line in the article interesting: "... similar to the way it brought a limited FaceTime experience to Android and Windows users in iOS 15.....", and immediately had to try it out. Kind of goofy in the web browser.

Was it you that told me about web browser Andriod user with facetime or someone else ?

I'm inclined to believe Apple will make a half-assed iMessage app for Android before they ever support RCS.

I don't really care what color bubble I am on anybody's phone, but I don't like receiving text messages from a personal contact that they didn't actually type themselves. Instead of trying to parse those and turn them into reactions, I'd be fine if Google or other app developer just blocked them altogether, just like spam. :)

Ahh you going back to Fuzzylumpkin theory earlier on in the thread "Dont text people with iPhones"

So as of now, there is basically nothing working between RCS and iMessaging? Is that everyone's understanding?

I earlier had difficulty switching on RCS ("chats", what a stupid name to call it, in my opinion") on my phone (Samsung A21) but it seems I now can. I did some rudimentary testing with one of my kids and I don't think it adds anything for me (on Android11) on my side of the "chat" exchange with an Apple device. I don't even see the ability for me to use any of those "reaction" features on my end.

Yeah, I've used it with family members. Of course, if I want to initiate a FT call, I have to text an iPhone user to send a me a link. The response usually looks something like:

Loved "hey, need to chat, send me a FT invite"

My wife is actually starting to move away from FT, favouring FB video calls instead, since FT seems to want to use higher resolution/bandwidth and the calls will often crap out. All fine by me (to move away from FT). I don't think she or I would ever want to regularly use FT via browser. Not very polished.
