Anyone thinking about returning this phone and going to the S8?

How LG slipped down with awful camera after the amazing G4/V10 cam?

G6 is good phone for 2016, but even in 2016 it can't hold anything vs the S7E, which is a better buy, let alone the S8.

I got my mate 9 and planning maybe getting the Mate 10 if there is big enough improvement, best battery life i ever seen.
They didn't necessarily slip, but maybe the camera was so great back then because of the relative camera phone landscape. The camera is still very good, but just has more competition for best cell camera on the market. And, as others said, the phone isn't even technically 'released' yet so maybe this is a large soak test and tweaks are coming.

I can guarantee that the G6 will take better pool shots than the Pixel will, assuming the phone is in the pool.

I can't believe that they are using Gorilla glass 3.

Thats not how it works.

Gorilla Glass iterations aren't typically "improvements", they are totally separate products with different levels of scratch resistance vs shatter resistance among other qualities. If its scratch resistant youre increasing brittleness and it will shatter more easily, and if its shatter resistant you increase malleability but that makes more prone to scratching.

As far as returns go;
Literally the only thing about the Galaxy S8 that i find more appealing than the G6 is the use of AMOLED, and only because of how much it improves the always on display. But i knew that going in and its not enough to make me switch.

The G6:
- has an awesome HDR10 / Dolby vision display
- very slim bezzles, gorgeous design
- Isn't awkward as hell to case or hold because of a curved screen gimmick
- can survive a run in the rain or a fall in the pool
- has incredible battery life
- has a camera equal to the S7 (learn to settings) PLUS an amazing wide angle camera
- omg the bundles. 43inch LGTV + Google home + half price off G6 + buying out my old phone? Thanks verizon/LG!

S8...
- Always on Display is much more vibrant than LG's cuz amoled
- Very nice customization on the software buttons.
- Works with Dream VR.
- has 64GB of storage. This isn't really a concern for me since I used ADB to map my SDcard as internal on the G6 but for standard consumers the extra storage on the S8 is a nice boost.
- Has Bluetooth 5. Means not much yet, but it will mean more by Christmas.
- Runs its "QuadHD" screen in 1080p by default over battery concerns...
- At least it isn't "quite" as curved as the S7 edge
- Battery life is a big unknown, but having a bigger screen than the s7 edge which was notorious for poor battery life over time with a 20% smaller battery is very concerning. Not sure an 835 can fix this.
- Has basically the same camera as S7
- No Wide Angle lens for main camera
- Has new dedicated button. For Camera!? No. Bixby. :( Basically a button you mostly want to avoid pressing.
- Has an Iris scanner, a nearly unusable fingerprint scanner and facial recognition lock that can be fooled with a photo. Having had an iris scanner on my previous device, I would take a fingerprint scanner i can use (G6) anyday over an iris scanner, except days when i need to wear gloves.

Edit: For Throttle.

I think it can be, the question is, is this the "final" camera software LG intended? Or do they plan to touch it up once this phone goes live ala HTC 10 or the S7's initial yellow tint issue.

I know the V20 had some of the same issues that were never fixed, but this is their most highly regarded release, perhaps ever.

We'll see I guess in a few days.
Yep, that's why I'm dumping the V20. Nothing has been done.

IMO, it's the 2015 camera sensor that's holding them back, not the software.

If you're going to return it, what is your reasoning other than because you like the S8 - of course, that's plenty of justification. I have looked at and handled both of them in stores and they both have their pros and cons for me. The S8 is definitely winning in the aesthetics department. I like the G6 form factor better. Price-wise, the G6 is more appealing - did you the Google Voice with it? The S8 comes with an SD card and Gear VR if you pre-order it. I would recommend going to the store and having a look at the device and playing around with it before you make the decision. For me, the S8 is gorgeous but I will never buy one because of the placement of the fingerprint sensor. I don't have miniature hands, but when I hold the phone in natural position, I can't reach the finger print scanner with my index finger (this is something that requires me to adjust my hand every time I want to turn the phone on). I didn't mess with the facial recognition/retinal scanner, but that's not a norm for me when it comes to unlocking a device. The fingerprint scanner will always be more convenient, IMO. Anyway, just consider the pros and cons and definitely to look at them. Good luck with your decision.

Maybe :), i wasn't impressed by G6 camera at all, i was wowed by G4 camera back in 2k15 but the landscape is different now ye...

Also why no one has the gloves mode? on my mate 9 i was surprised to see Gloves mode, it could turn very useful in certain situations.

Wow..are you done with LG? lol
Yep, if the Note 7 hadn't failed, I'd already be done with them. They had 2 chances, the V20 and G6, and continued to use old hardware. Camera is important to me and I will no longer compromise.

S8+ now, Note 8 later this year.

But we haven't seen any testing that suggests the S8 has a better camera. What we have seen are tests that show the S7 and the G6 are on par with each other in terms of camera with the G6 having the fantastic added bonus of wide angle. the S8 appears to have the same camera as the S7.

You might want to check Digital Trends hands on review of the S8. They're claiming blurry shots in low light with the S8 and listed the camera as a con. I have the LG V10 and Galaxy S6 and S7. I used to jump on pre-orders, but I've been burned and taught a lesson. It's better to wait for the phone to be released, read all the reviews including customer comments and then make your decision.

The S8 has a brand new sensor, not the same as last year.

The Note 7 destroyed anything LG has in full auto, especially with motion in the frame or low light.

So I have every confidence that the S8 will be just as good or better than the Note 7.

If that's better for you, that's great. That's not what I do.

And I'm supposed to put stock into a review of a pre-production phone? No thanks. I'll order the phone, put it thru my own tests which are the only ones that matter and return it if I don't like it.

I personally love the back camera. If a software update helps with some motion blur issue I'll be ecstatic. But its not a deal breaker, at least so far.

The front facing camera is a joke however. Luckily I won't be using it much.

Your wish your money... But don't be blind
Don't be blind? I've owned every flagship LG phone since the G2 so I'm pretty sure I have enough experience with what LG brings to the table in both hardware and software.

I also had and returned the G6 and currently own the V20 for the past 6 months.

A guy walking around recording video for 12 minutes tells people nothing about the quality of pictures. It doesn't show them the complete lack of detail when you zoom in on a picture. Doesn't show blur when there's motion in the frame when taking a picture.

Is the Note 8 going to have the same thin screen ratio as the S8? I hope not. I think it sucks. I can't imagine anyone who is unbiased preferring it. Make the Note 8 screen the same height but cm wider than S8+ and I might consider it.

Remember that Gorilla Glass 3 does not scratch as easily as 4 or 5. It is more brittle and therefore should have a good tempered glass screen protector on it. Being that the screen is flat there should be someone making them and they should fit. Gorilla Glass 5 is more flexible and therefore does not shatter as easily when dropped but it can "scratch" easier than 3.
