Anyone using Hangouts for SMS instead of standard SMS app?

Thank you to OP for starting this thread.....I have been using Hangouts as my standard SMS app for several months and I prefer it waaaaay more than the stock app, and many other apps I have tried......

Until today, when I incurred a problem and I have searched everywhere for an answer with no luck. I know there was an update recently and I did update......today for some reason, my texts were not going through to my husband and my receptionist.....I finally noticed on the bottom left of the message that you can switch that person/message to hangout or sms.......when they are on sms you get the choice, but when it is hangouts you have no choice to switch back.....I don't know how this happend because I didn't switch these contacts.....can anyone please help me get them back to SMS. I used the Hangouts app when I had the Nexus 5, but with the Note 3 I prefer the stock messaging app.

Sent from my Samsung Galaxy Note 3... yeah, it's spectacular!

I'm testing it now. I like it for the integration. I don't like that the preview in lock screen only lets you see the message, dismiss it, or reply by voice. Does anyone know how to set it so I can reply directly? Even if I have to do my swipe pattern to log in, I want the message right there waiting so I don't have to pull it up again. Handcent seemed much better at this.

@GregMargie, all you need is to touch that button you've pointed with red arrow and a list including sms will come and then you just choose sms. They recently heavily integrated the functions. The first time you use it after that updated it warns you about the integration. You might have just missed it notice.

Are you trying to reply to them or initiate a new conversation? The reason I ask is that I read somewhere that you need to manually merge the contact's number and email address to be able to see both options. So if they sent you a message using hangouts, theoretically they used their email address which is why you are only seeing that option. Search the hangouts app help section for details on how to merge the two (number and email address for the same contact) and you should then be able to see both options to cycle through.

I love the hangout messaging app way better then the stock one..... Faster in performance also love the quick slide to the right to get back to your other texts..... But overall I love it

I use Hangouts as my default messaging app as well. Works great.

What are the benefits for using Hangout for messaging? Sorry did not read through this entire post.

I am using Chomp as my default messaging app, and bought the full version. I love it but wondering if Hangout is even better?

I have tried many SMS programs and Hangouts has been the best one "for me". The only thing that is really annoying to me is the lack of the 'Return' Key!! Lot's of people have said, do this and do that to make it appear.....but it Doesn't!

I definitely prefer Hangouts to anything else. I then get the additional option to video chat with the hubby. I like the emoticons that are built in as well. The stock messaging app has nothing unless you find something in Google Play but like I said, I like the video chat option being there. FYI: I will even on occasion use chatON. The walkie-talkie feature is nice to have on occasion when a text just can't convey what you want to express like your voice will.

How does one get notifications on their lock screen (notifying them if they've received a sms via hangouts app) if im using hangouts instead of standard my sms app?

I use/like Hangouts for SMS. I do use SMS pop up for notification and it works great and when screen is locked.
