Are phones getting too big?

I started this thread to say that phones are getting way too big these days. I want to upgrade, but phones are just huge. And finding a good top of the line specced device is nearly impossible. I hope people are on the same page as me. I love how Apple has the nice specced phone that is reasonably sized. Not everybody wants a big phone

Is there anyone out there that agrees???

Only phones that are just too big are things like the galaxy mega which is insane.

Note 3 is as big so a phone should be.

Iphones are just too small though

I think the nitch is definitely there for phablet style phones. But I think it's still a nitch. Why? Because it breaks the function over form philosophy with "mobile!" And anytime you do that so that "other" features are exploited by the trade off, for me, that's a nitch product. Now that's not to say that one day the idea if a phone will not change to the point that audible communications will be a thing of the past (god I hope not), but we aren't there yet, by any means.

Can an iphone be a bit larger? Sure! But today's norm in mobile seems to be 5in screens and up. People have little choice but to buy what is available, so in essence, it's definitely being forced upon you if you're looking to future proof your investment. I think the voices are there crying for change. The blogs definitely see it! You hear and read about the problem pretty regularly. I think OEMs are scared to go back to smaller in fear of it looking like a downgrade. Imagine a GS6 with a 4.8 screen. I don't see that happening. It's like conceding that you went in the wrong direction.

I have been extremely happy with the Nokia 1020 which is 4.5". I was a little apprehensive about changing over to Windows 8 mobile but I have to say it's been a very good eperience. Buying the camera grip which adds an additional 5 hours of operation is defiantly a must. In fact liked Windows 8 so much I also purchased a Nokia 2520 tablet with the keyboard battery case, the combination of the two gives me 18 hours of operation. I do have a Samsung Pro 8.4 so I haven't completely gone to the dark side but I kind of wish I would have waited and gotten the new Lenovo Thinkpad 8 instead.

I think you hit exactly what the issue is, and to be honest I am not sure why these companies do not see it?

When not make a Samsung S5 with the 5.2" display as well as a 4.3" (or something to that effect) but with the same or damn near same specs? Same with all the other phone companies, I really think they are missing out on a market that does want a powerful phone in the less than 5" size.

I think it's a resource issue. The more powerful processors and high-pixel screens draw more power, and that requires a larger battery. So they make the phone larger to hold the battery.

That is true. IOS is a totally different animal. It utilizes it's resources much better and is more simplified

Well, the S4 mini. Why does it need more powerful specs? To do exactly what better? I wonder, is it slow? More laggy than it's big sister? If it had the same processor and amount of RAM as it's big sister it would have much shorter battery life. Many would be very very unhappy with that. What is the solution?

Good question. I'm not exactly sure. I have both a Moto X and an iphone 5S and both are equally snappy after 6 months if use.

In fact, I find the Moto X screen to be clearer with greater color saturation than the retina display. Iphone has always run dual core. Not exactly the elite of processors. But in Apple's world, that doesn't matter.

Personally, I think it may be a design issue. Geeks do worry about specs, even if they're wrong. But average joes want eye candy, and the iphone gives them that. I think that's prob what makes the difference when it comes to minis.

I think the Moto G just about hits the sweet spot - pocket friendly with a reasonable sized screen. Anything larger than a 5" screen is too big for a phone.

Another big phone lover here. I do a lot of reading on mine, so bigger makes sense to me. I also have quite long fingers so reaching power buttons and across big screens is possible for me. I understand how some people want smaller screens though - particularly ladies. A lot of females have smaller hands and want smaller phones. I think, eventually, we will see phones being offered in different sizes - look at the Z1/Z1 Compact for instance.

I'm amazed people get so het up about it though! Shows how obsessed we all are with phones!

In my opinion it is the other way round - females prefer the phablet style because the can put it in their handbags whilst males want a reasonable sized phone that they can easily put in their jeans pocket.

5" is the upper limit for me and minus a very thin bezel, even that is too much. IMHO, 4.7/4.8 is near perfect.

Yea, I think that's the general consensus. I also think Apple figured that out and that's why they're going with 4.7. If there was no home button, I'm willing to bet they would go to 4.8.

Moto X for me is perfect! And it's just about the same foot print as the 5s give or take a mm

I could not go smaller than my 6 inch LG G-FLEX!

SENT FROM MY G-FLEX, BECAUSE SIZE MATTERS, BUT SO DOES FLEXability😁

Personally I don't care for the big screen phones .The size of the Moto X works for me both screen size/ and performance. :)

The Note3's 5.7 inches are perfect size for my aging eyes. I also have the iphone 5s, but I find myself reaching for the larger screen most of the time. I wouldn't want to go any larger with the screen size for a phone, but if the Note4 is 6 inch or less I will probably look into purchasing it ...SMILE. I'm glad and welcome the larger screen size smartphones. Times have changed and there are different phones made for everyone. NICE

I have come to the realization that for older folks, it makes sense. I'm a middle aged working guy. For me, I like video like the rest of em. But I also like the thought of being productive. And productivity for me means, the right size for email and messaging, and a top notch no frills platform. Sure I want to see hd media and the best specs that make sense, but I want what makes "communications" best.

As much as I like media, I still think it's a luxury and it's secondary to why I carry a mobile device. Also, because I enjoy rugged mil spec products, I use Lifeproof on my iphone, which, just to make it waterproof, adds bulk. A Samsung device with a Lifeproof case or otterbox for me is just way too much!
