Are phones getting too big?

My wife and I always go to the mobile section whenever we go into best buy and just check things out. She is eligible for her upgrade soon and is disappointed in her lack of smaller options. She doesn't like the size of the one or the gs5 and wants something around 4.5". It is to the point she is considering the iPhone based solely on the size of it.

Android phones did a better job with smaller screens a couple of years ago. When you went from portrait to landscape the text was resized to fill the width of screen , making it easy to read. You could pinch out and it would do the same thing.
Now they don't. If you pinch out to make text bigger it won't auto fit,' so you have to scroll right and left to read.
That's why I'm got rid of my note 3 and got the moto g. The bigger screen still made some reading difficult still so why carry the bulk.

My droid incredible 2 used to do that! That was the main feature that won me over between android and iOS! Not sure why this was eliminated!

I started this thread to say that phones are getting way too big these days. I want to upgrade, but phones are just huge. And finding a good top of the line specced device is nearly impossible. I hope people are on the same page as me. I love how Apple has the nice specced phone that is reasonably sized. Not everybody wants a big phone

Is there anyone out there that agrees???

Yes I agree that flagship phones are not available in smaller form factorse.

I have Nexus 5 which is nice phone but I found 5 in display is my very limit. I won't get another Android phone unless it's display is smaller 5 inches or has zero bezel.

I believe my next Android phone will be what comes out of Project Ara. The have 3 standard sizes and looking forward to the mini form factor. Hopefully customizing mini project phone to have specs of a current flagship phone won't cost much more than buying unlocked flagship phone.

Personally, since I use my device more as a mobile communications tool, email, news reader, I like smaller, 4.7 at max. I do video as well, but I don't do it as often to trade portability for viewability. Plus, with Chromecast, for me, there's almost no reason to have a big phone. Heck, I can't even watch more then 3 or 4 min of video on any mobile device, whether it's 4in or 5in. Both are too small either way!

I think a Moto X with a companion 7 or 8 in tablet for media is perfect. My iPhone 5s with iPad mini is also the perfect match when it comes to size.

But a Samsung Galaxy S or Note alone? Nope, not my style. But I do understand why people do want such a thing. It just doesn't make sense to me.

I've always preferred the bigger screens myself--I do a lot of reading on my phone, and use it for video as well (not so much gaming anymore, I can't do that on a handheld lol), and with the smaller screens I just can't see as well. I've also got really big hands for a girl, so the larger phones fit better and I'm not constantly hitting a million things at once :p My only real issue with larger phones is that they don't fit in my damn pockets (though I tend to blame the makers of clothing for not giving women 'real' pockets) but if I wear men's jeans--which are more comfortable anyway--it's a non-issue.

I don't know, I can't stand Apple for a lot of reasons, mainly the OS; I've always had a lot of problems with Apple functionality. Hell, I can't even get an iPod to work for longer than three months -.- Androids have been wonderful to me, and now that they're making screens so much bigger, I'm a very happy customer. Sure, there will be a point where even the most gung-ho for big screens will say, "Dude...no," but that is not this day (at least not for this girl right here).

Lol I get you! There are things about iOS that just flat out tick me off! But u know, I have a Moto X and an iPhone 5S, and for some reason, I keep gravitating toward the iphone for a strange "comfort" reason. I compare it to having a house that feels like a home verses just having a house. Go figure.... Cause I like the Moto X better in every way that counts.

But I do understand the reading part. I read a lot of blogs, news, tech news, I use flipboard, tapatalk, etc. I just keep saying that I'm grateful for still having good eye sight lol.

But ironically, even with both hands, I type much much faster on a smaller device. And the Moto X does have this quirk that I hate where every time I touch the space bar, I'm also hitting the home button and get this nasty feeling vibrate like I made an error. So for me, it feels natural to type on an iphone and I get far less mistakes as opposed to a bigger phone with more spread out keys.

I do love swiftkey tho and wish there was an option for swipe on iOS!

I wouldn't own anything smaller than a 4.75" screen and 5.2" screen seems to be my upper limit now. I am happy with my Nexus 5 with it's 4.95" screen. I just want a OLED screen that is 1000 times faster refresh, lower power drain on battery , brighter and much thinner than other screens technology today.

Wouldn't own any thing larger than 4.75" either. If I need to read or something that's what my tablet is for.

I used to use an iPhone 4 until I upgraded to the galaxy s4 last February. It is a big phone but I have gotten used to it. I really enjoy watching videos on it and playing games. It was a huge upgrade for me. Is amazing on how phones have gotten over the years. I saw the note 3 and it is just to big for me maybe next upgrade I may swich back to iPhone or give windows phone a try.

x ShadowBldex I promise if you go back to an iphone you'll regret it. Most do. I thought the largeness of the note was crazy but I loved my note 2 and love my note 3 even more !

I was in the Barbershop yesterday and saw an older Lady hold a Samsung MEGA up to her hear (her head dissappeared). Needless to say she needs a Bluetooth in the worst way....SMILE

Welcome to the forums Melody! 🙋

I understand you very well, I have 2 sisters that think pretty much the same as you on this matter. 😀

Spencerdl for some a covered face might be a good thing. I have enough wrinkles having a phone to my face might make me look younger

The Note3's 5.7 inches are perfect size for my aging eyes. I also have the iphone 5s, but I find myself reaching for the larger screen most of the time. I wouldn't want to go any larger with the screen size for a phone, but if the Note4 is 6 inch or less I will probably look into purchasing it ...SMILE. I'm glad and welcome the larger screen size smartphones. Times have changed and there are different phones made for everyone. NICE
My also aging eyes sympathize with your aging eyes.

I love my note 3 and wouldn't trade it for nothing

That's what happened to me. Also female and it was so bad i started looking at iPhone, but knew i just couldn't. Thank goodness the moto X came out, but i guess they're going to typical jumbo route later this year. What a damn shame.

Coming from the hand held video console scene, I've always been with the "bigger is better" screen crown, but I have to admit that I am having some serious doubts when it comes to some of these phones. The Samsung Notes have to be great for gaming, but I wouldn't want to try and lug one of those around in a pair of jeans or dress pants, there is no way they can be comfortable in anything but a baggy pair of sweats!
