Are you gonna buy it?

No it doesn't. Most everybody is going to throw it into a case anyway. And by the way, several of the hands-on impression videos I saw today said it is an attractive device in person.

I never doubted its attractive look and feel. But this is a top notch device, that falls into the category of iPhones, and Galaxy S and Note series devices, at that price point, they could have made it more attractive.

Let me make my point clear once again. I am an iPhone owner, but I am not some kind of crazy apple fanboy. Android too is a great OS. Google did a great job with Pixel XL smartphone. The new google assistance, is one step ahead than Siri, its integration with google home and the overall the usage of google home has brought home automation to the next level, which apple haven't achieved yet.

Coming back to the topic, Pixel devices lie into the category of iPhones, Galaxy S & Note series category (Nexus were more of midrange devices). So at this price point, google could have made it as beautiful as HTC 10 and iPhone 7. Look at HTC 10, its one of the most beautiful device and its performance is best.

Having an finger print scanner at the back sounds bit impractical. instead of having a huge gap in the bottom, and home button having fingerprint scanner would have been better.

Overall I liked what I saw, but I will not be getting the Pixel phones. They are iphone like expensive and are definitely not better than my HTC 10.
If they offered a dual speaker setup and a 100-200€ more affordable price, then I would consider buying the XL. Currently, the XL costs 1009€ in Germany. This is a lot of money. Google is competing in iPhone territory. I am not sure though if people would pay so much money for a Google phone. The iPhone has a much stronger brand.
If I compare my HTC 10 to the Pixel and Pixel XL, I cannot see an area (apart from the fast system updates), where the Pixel phones are better. The HTC 10 offers premium quality at a much more affordable price. Sorry Google, but I cannot justify spending so much money on your phone (which is build by HTC anyway..)

I'm exactly with you. I have a Galaxy S5 and if I was upgrading, my first choice would be the HTC 10. Normally I would happily pay for all the features of the Note 7, but with all the dramas plus questionable software performance, I would go for the HTC.

I really like the Pixel but for the price, it doesn't measure up to the competition. For the price, it should:

Be waterproof.
Have a dual lens camera.
Have 64GB as base model.

Also:

The fingerprint scanner should be at the front. And the bezels all around are too large. It makes the phone look dated by a couple of years.

It will be a no from me.
The pixel looks just "fine" all around. And I guess that is the problem. Besides the software features there are absolutely nothing that really excites me. At that price point it better make me feel like a high-school kid on a first date!

And I think that is where Samsung have nailed it this year. The s7 edge/Note 7 sure as hell feel special. The pixel just looks... fine. Like a oneplus 3 or your choice of any other mid-tier phone.

And I have now seen several people in here talking about how they trust google to deliver timely updates, stability and a great software experience. Have people been experiencing collective memory loss?
Yes. The Nexus program might have delivered timely updates but it has been a bumpy ride. Like loosing your teeth bumpy at times...

Comparing it to an iPhone is a bit dumb. Many people - for good reasons - like the ios ecosystem. And if you like it you will have to pay the big bucks... That is how Apple plays the game.

We all know that Android is different. So comparing specs of the pixel and the iphone to perform a value judgement is just pointless...

Enough whining from mr grumpy. I do look forward to the reviews

Probably, I'll wait for reviews, I'll buy it if their camera claim is correct and if it's faster than 1+3

What the hell is it with the side bezels? This in late 2016. It's almost exactly like my Galaxy S5. I'm surprised no one has commented on this.

I really like both. Probably not going to buy it so soon, but the Pixel XL in Quite Black and with 32GB of storage is a pretty good contender in my opinion

Too expensive to buy outright, but I am glad to see it is available on Project fi with an installment plan. That makes it much more interesting to me, especially if the camera is as good as they claim. I'll be very interested in the real-world tests of the camera. I find the AI stuff a negative since it tends to work so erratically and often be less than useful. I know, I know everyone keeps saying AI is improving and will someday rule the world, but until it can answer basic questions with an answer that doesn't make me laugh or scream I'll pass.

These phones look like mid-tier phones and probably should have been priced that way. Most Nexus users are people who wanted great hardware at an affordable price. This change in pricing will only alienate old users from buying newer models. So they are basically trying to fish premium phone users. I don't think it will work at least with this iteration. It doesn't add enough features or look the part to be on par with Samsung and iPhone premium devices. So its vanilla android and nothing great besides a camera and unlimited photo space?

I feel people are only paying for the G on the back of the device. I somehow feel just buying this device is cheating yourself.

For the price of the Pixel, there is nothing special you are getting for your money. The camera app is still atrtocious, there are no actual bells and whistles that would correlate to the money you would be spending on that phone.

I have had the Nexus 4, 5, 6p, 7, Chromecast (5 of them), Chromebooks (2), and a Chromebox, so I am not some troll, I have been a part of this eco system for some time, and I have no idea where Google is headed anymore.

This is for nvettese:

When you used it, was the camera slower than they claimed, pictures looked worse than they claimed? When you say atrocious, what exactly was so bad? I want a great camera in my next phone, so this is troubling to hear.

The more I watch the mini hands-on videos, the more I want one. I'm just frustrated with the process. I really want the very blue one, and have no idea if it will ever be available again. Google is holding me hostage, and I don't want to buy one now if I can get a blue one. First world problems, ha ha, I know.

You all have made good points about the price. I defended the price of the Nexus 6 a few years ago, but I can't defend the price of the pixel phones. Every other flagship phone has something extra to offset what it doesn't have. The Note 7 only comes in one capacity, but had a microSD card slot. The iphone has no microSD card slot but comes in more large storage options. Both phones are water resistant, and there is no limited color.

Having said all that, all these flagship phones are too expensive IMO. What I like about the Pixel phones is the software exerience and Google's ecosystem. I have an Iphone 7 plus, and I like it a lot, but stock Android has caught up to, and even surpassed IOS IMO. This seems to be a little known secret.

From the experience of my Nexus 6P with 7.0, it ran smoother than my Iphone 7 plus. For some reason the Iphone 7 plus, while still a great phone; stutters here and there. I can tell just by watching the few videos that the Pixel phones are running smoother. I love Googles card animations.

No way are those prices justified for what you're getting. Google is terrible at marketing, and that keynote was painful to watch. There was no mention or demo of the speaker set up or DAC to calm the fears of those of us used to dual front stereo speakers, no upgrade in battery capacity, a smaller screen, and still no OIS for the camera.

Given all of that, we're expected to pay anywhere from $649 to $869? And that's not yet including tax, whether or not we decide to get device protection (which also includes tax) and any accessories (which also includes tax). That can come to as much as $1,000+.

I'm sorry, but it seems Google hasn't learned from their mistake with the Nexus 6. Granted, the Pixels are more premium devices in feel and performance, but to me, they haven't achieved iPhone-level status to justify spending iPhone-level prices just yet. Google is obviously trying to be Apple with these Pixel phones. And just like Apple, they're going to dole out features and hardware specs piecemeal, necessitating people to pay through the nose for devices, as well as soon-to-be proprietary accessories.

Now, if I won a Pixel XL, would I be foolish enough to turn it down? Hell no! But as an Android user, if I wanted an iPhone and all that it entails to be in Apple's ecosystem, I'd just get an iPhone, not a wannabe iPhone running Android. I don't see myself actually spending for a Pixel XL until there's a comfortable price drop. :/

Would have gotten it but not being available through T-Mobile, for use with Jump, kills it for me.

Have fun guys!

You could get it through the Google Fi project. If T-Mobile allows BYOD then it should work fine since Fi uses T-Mobile (as well as US Cellular and Sprint) as an MVO.

hey does google still do that thing the trade in u send in your old nexus they pay u cash and u use that cash on the new nexus/pixel at checkout ?
