AT&T HTC One M8 4.4.4 MMS/Group Messaging Issues

I'm so glad that I am not the only one that is having issues. And it is beyond frustrating. I am waiting for a warranty replacement to come from AT&T after doing a hard reset last night and still having the issue. Mine happens with the stock messenger app. and it's both group and single messages. Regular and MMS. It just works when it wants and more often than not, doesn't work. I turned off the Enhanced LTE so let's see if that helps tonight.

HTC One M8: Settings -> Mobile data -> (bottom checkbox on list) Enhanced 4G LTE Mode --> turn it off.

the tech said all this check box does (when working correctly) is give a slightly clearly sound when on a normal voice call with someone else who also has an Enhanced 4G LTE Mode phone (and he said there were only 5 phones on the market that actually even support this feature and that only some select big-cities have the network to support this feature.... I'm in Las Vegas BTW.)

So I'm giving that a try... so far.. our test chats have worked. (fingers crossed)

I turned off enhanced 4G LTE and the group messages are still not working. Whomp :( Thanks for the suggestion, it was worth a try. I'm sure we're all grasping at straws and anything else at this point. Back to waiting for the someone bring us the solution!

I am having the same issue! Did you ever get it figured out? No one at AT&T seems to know what they are talking about when it comes to the issue and they keep saying that mobile data needs to be turned on. Even when my mobile data is turned on.. i don't receive the messages, so that cant be the reason why it doesn't work.

I use textra and just changed my size send and receive to 600 and it's working now.
Not a fan of the stock or hangouts and was having same issue tonight.

another thing you guys can try is maybe disabling the AT&T backup and sync for text messages. Maybe that's causing issues?

Hm, that's funny because this is actually the exact opposite of what I did, which kindof helped. it's not a software solution, but I enabled the AT&T Backup and Sync for text messages and have been using messages.att.net a lot lately. I've noticed that messages that don't come through or are "transient downloads" on my phone end up and go through on the messages.att.net website. (which makes it clear that it's the software update and nothing we can do on our end). So when I see that the messages are un-downloadable on my phone, I go to the AT&T messages website on a computer and I can read the conversation just fine. I know it's a bit of work just to read a few messages, but if you're always in front of a computer (like I am) or desperate. This is one of your options. Let me know if anyone else has tried this and if it's worked for you!

Disclaimer: The messages.att.net website is functional, at best. There could be improvements, it definitely doesn't have the speed and sleekness of iMessage or Whatsapp Web. but at this point, it's better than nothing.

Oh really. Hmm. Well, I guess I can let customers try that out. I've just been replacing phones since I have no other option of any kind at this point lmao. Well, hopefully a software push comes through and resolves this.

Having the same issue with MMS messages. Been on phone with AT&T and supposedly it was supposed to be resolved by a Tech since the tier one CSR couldn't help me. This is very aggravating. I've been dealing with this for over a month and my patience is about at it's end... I just hope AT&T stops dragging their feet on releasing 5.0 AND that it fixes this issue. What good is the phone if it can't receive texts?!!! ARGGGGHHH!!!

I got me a warranty replacement and then upgraded the firmware on that one and it seems fine as of now. I'll keep y'all up to date if if returns or not.

How did you upgrade the firmware? I've had same problem... Did everything you did the first go around (ie. Factory reset, New SIM, erased messages, etc.) And it persisted, so my local AT&T shop gave me a BRAND new M8 (pretty cool of them...didn't get a refurbished or anything, talkin new out of box), but it's still happening!! Just today I got two messages from yesterday!! Arrrgghh!

Yeah, replacement doesn't matter -- brand new replacement M8 as of 13 days ago and now happening again. Eff.

There are times when I can not get any group texts and times when I can. It is very odd. When I cannot get them, I will get an Anonymous text that is blank when it should be a real text message. Last night my group texts did not work, but this morning they have been working. Very odd.

I get the Anonymous texts also. Mine is random. At times I get the MMS and at other times i get that a person texted with the message box saying Download and when you tell it to download it says downloading, then goes back to Download again. At other times I don't get anything. It just doesn't retrieve it and friends will ask why I didn't respond and show me that they texted, but I got nothing. How can this issue take so long to fix and patch??!!??

Experiencing the same issues as everyone else. To date, AT&T has been clueless and it certainly doesn't seem like anyone has any specific information on this issue. Like you, shortly after I received the Android 4.4.4 OTA update, I started noticing that in group MMS messages, I was missing content. Also, I started getting the "Anonymous" messages and the "Download" messages that fail to do anything. I contacted AT&T and have since spoken with no fewer than 5 different technical representatives. The last of which, sent me a warranty replacement as a last resort after checking APN settings, deleting all messages, factory resetting my phone, etc. etc.

I received the replacement yesterday and got a brand new SIM card for it. After updating all of the apps and receiving the OTA update to Android 4.4.4, I'm still having the same issues. According to a store associate, AT&T is aware of the issue and waiting on a fix from HTC; however, in speaking with someone in technical support, there were no open "known issues" accounting for this MMS problem. That said, if you haven't done so already, please call AT&T and let them know about the problem to generate some more awareness.

This is so incredibly frustrating being that the issue has persisted for more than a month, AT&T doesn't seem to know what's going on, and I even communicated with HTC who also do not appear to be aware of the problem. Being that the last resort (warranty replacement) has failed to fix the issue, I'll be calling customer support once again to see if they can will send me a replacement phone of a different variety. I like the HTC One M8, but frankly, I'm not willing to wait the months it's likely going to take to sort this issue out and get a software update to fix it.

So I woke up today and saw that I received group texts correctly. I tested it by sending some picture texts and so far everything is working fine today.

I did absolutely nothing to try to fix it. I just waited it out. I have Verizon by the way.

Did you get the 5.0 update on Verizon?

Anyone with any updates/progress on this issue? I spoke with someone in AT&T technical support yesterday who was 100% convinced this was all due to iMessages on Apple devices...funny how those all worked prior to the 4.4.4 update. I also called HTC and spoke with a technical support rep there as well. He collected some information and escalated my issue to the next level of support. I'm not expecting either of these channels to really fix the issue as they are both pointing the finger at each other...

I can assure you that it's not iMessages that isn't the case. It happens on messages sent from any phone, Android or iOS and any carrier. I myself am giving them one more week to fix this issue. If not fixed, I am terminating my contract and going elsewhere. Both my phones are deemed worthless.

With you on that sentiment. AT&T provides the phone and service. Further, they are the ones who drag their feet on these Android updates as they are supposedly testing them for compatibility with their network and devices. Then, when they release the updates, they break core functionality on the phone and no one has a clue! Unbelievable...

I'm with ya!
