Attempting root tomorrow

i was never asked to click yes. what was i supposed to carry over to my sdcard? i carried over the entire folder.. and on my sd card it says DarkGlossMod.

when i click on that, it gives me those two folder options.

Ok Ok, i see what it is. Somehow the file's not zipped anymore. It should have just copied the whole DarkGlossMod.zip to your sd card. Then when you go down to install zip from sdcard and choose it, it should unzip itself. I don't know how it unzipped the file and moved it to your sd card.

Ok try removing the file from your sd card, it should be safe to use Root Explorer. Re-Download the .zip, copy it to your desktop, make sure usb debugging is turned on. Plug your phone into your comp again, mount the sd card, open the sd card folder and copy the DarkGlossMod.zip to it again. See if that works...all i can think of.

Hmmm that's weird I've never had that happen before. Maybe your comp is setup somehow to do auto unzip's...might wanna check that out.

i just redownloaded for the like 10th time and for some reason this time it stayed as a zip... now im gunna go ahead and try the clockwork thing and instal from sd

awesome thanks alot.. got the theme to work. so if i want to change it someday i just find a new theme... put on sd card like i just did.. and do all the same instructions or do i need to remove this theme before i put a new one on there

No problem man, as far as i know you can just install a new theme over the your existing one the same way you just did that one (if it can't be installed using ROM Manager).

I don't know if it's the most popular, but i've used Androdena Galassia and DarkGlossMod and so far i'm liking DGM more. Other user's might be using other theme's. I made a list of the links to all of the other theme's and made it a new thread if you wanna check it out. All of the links are to XDA.

awesome i will go look. Where do i go for icons? iv seen some sweet icons but am clueless on those

All of the icons i've seen are usually from a Theme, other than that i'm not sure. I've never really gone and looked for just icons.

Soooo at first I thought the clean rom was making phone faster...but now I think it didn't make a change at all...

I'm highly considering the non voodoo kernal or the super fast one from xda...I know you guys advice me against it..but I'm not seeing that good of results

Well if you really wanna try a kernel, make sure you make a nandroid backup using ROM Manager before you do. And i would suggest the jt1134 stable non-Voodoo you can download using ROM Manager itself, since it's your first kernel.

If you haven't seen an improvement going from the bloated stock to the JT Super Clean, there's something wrong with your phone.

But if you want to try a kernel, go for it.

IF you want to eliminate lag your gonna want either StupidFast kernel or JT's 11/16 kernel.

You can find latest version of StupidFast at XDA Developer forum and JT's latest kernel can be found at the #samsung-fascinate IRC channel.

My first kernel was StupidFast. To be honest the kernels are far more easier to flash then any ROM i've tried.
Download the kernel (always a .zip file) and copy it to the root of your SD card. Turn off your phone then hold down the power button and the volume rocker at the same time until you see the Samsung logo. You will be in recovery. Select apply sdcard:update.zip option (by using volume rocker to scroll and pressing home button to select) and you'll be in Clockworkmod. Select install zip from sdcard and hit power button to select this time. Select choose zip from sdcard. Find the kernel and select it. Confirm your selection. It will flash... choose go back after that. choose reboot from there.

Sounds like alot but its so so easy and you do it once and you'll have the know how for the next time you want to try a kernel.

You can overwrite kernels without uninstalling anything. Just flash another and your good to go.

Don't let everyone scare you... they learned the same way. If you stay away from voodoo odds are good that nothing bad is going to happen. If it does then you'lll be in Odin flashing back to recovery. There is a thread here on how to do that too. Ya its a ***** but its a good learning experience.

And not everyone has the same experience with kernels.. it ain't no plecebo. I was having issues leaving apps... was taking 3-5 seconds to see the home screen. After playing with kernels I've gotten it down to instant to .5 seconds for most apps. If it was already in memory it was instant going back in and going back out.

This is all advice for eliminating lag. You keep mentioning speed and thats what I equate speed to. If your looking for Quadrant scores I can't help ya. People make things to cheat the scores so they can brag how much better their device is over another. When I first got Voodoo when it was first released I had a 1500 Quad score and my phone ran like poop.

Agreed, I'm back to using StupidFast v1.0.36 it's pretty stable and other than QS scores (which aren't that important) my phone's alot smoother than Voodoo. I just don't know if the battery life is better yet. I'm pretty much just waiting for someone to come out with a debloated/debinged froyo.zip we can flash to see what's next for us.

I learned the same way, just make sure you do enough research on what you want to do and read things all the way through and be patient. After that you'll know exactly what to do and if you mess something up like you said there's always Odin and going back to stock.:)

Ah ya I was getting damn good battery life on the first few versions of StupidFast. But he kept making it faster with each version and I noticed that battery life wasn't so good anymore at least on my phone. I see people say it both ways some have good battery life some don't.

I choose speed over battery life tho. I'm never far from desk charger or car charger if need be. I make it thru my day tho without recharging so far. Of course lately i've been mounting up alot to flash kernels and I'm getting a bit of charges here and there without trying. So many things to flash just getting released every hour!

If your sit in the fascinate IRC channel there is releases like every hour. Also an excellent place to get help when you need it. Its instant help vs waiting for someone to reply to your forum thread.

i noticed he tweaked the minfree on his change log, I wonder how much of the difference is due to that. Personally I notice my phone running smoother with Autokiller on "strict." Of course some people much smarter than me say AK is bad.

I still have a hard time believing theyre making these things faster without Voodoo or overclock. A couple of peeps coming from Dirrk's have said it isn't faster, I guess its pretty subjective. The majority of people say these new kernels are magic but the Fascinate community is SO trendy sometimes and its not like there's a scientific test. Flashing new ROMs at the same time completely confounds the issue as well.
