Audio files as Ringtones. What folder do I really put it under?

There seems to be differing opnions as to under what folder you need to put your mp3 or whatever other format you want to use as custom ringtone, notification etc (e.g. one says sdcard/media/audio/ringtones/ another says sdcard/ringtones) and neither worked for me.

Does anyone know how to get my own mp3s to show up under setting when I want to pick the ringtone or notification sounds?

ringtones folder

Alarms to Alarms folder
Ringtones to Ringtones folder
Notifications (sms, calendar, etc) to Notifications folder

After placing all of them in the folders, do a reboot

as I posted in the other thread:

When i plug my N4 into my computer (win7) and explore to the device there is a ringtone folder. Every mp3 i have dropped into that folder has been available in my ringtone settings.

Note: Nothing worked better than plugging the phone into the laptop here. Moved files around, rebooted; files did not show up in the select list when moved into ringtones & rebooted. They did show up when the phone was and plugged in.
