Yes this is where I slipped up when I was doing it last night. The step after this when I think it was deleting things.

I'm not blind but I'm not seeing a download link for the auto root. I see links for drivers/credits and the orginal method but nothing else to download. Blonde moment maybe...help pls :)

there are 2 big yellow spinning graphics that say DOWNLOAD on them, click one

This doesn't do S-OFF through, correct?

yes it roots with S-off

I rooted the manual long way with the 9 steps. Can I unroot with your auto unroot method?

yes this is the same method as the manual way

I accidentally unrooted it and so I triied the process again but i got stuck at the part where it displays the serial number it says the serial number but also says the device is offline what do i do?

make sure...
Use 2.0 USB ports in the back of the computer(adb only officially supports the first primary USB port -- these are all in the back of the computer, and slower/older computers often have problems using a different one)
Activate debugging mode and stay awake (below USB debugging)
Phone in charge only mode

It worked last time this just started this time i tried

Noob question here, before I root do I need to make a backup of everything on my phone? I'm assuming yes from the research I've done, do I need to purchase a backup program/ which one is the best?

Also, once rooted, I like sense and would like to keep it and just remove the bloat. Is there any custom ROMS out there that utilize sense? Should I just keep sense and download a custom kernal to undervolt and overclock/underclock my CPU?

Thanks in advance for the help!

I'm starting from the beginning. I guess my computer won't recognize my phone. The msg I am getting is adb is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file

I downloaded the HTC Sync drivers and can connect to it on my PC.

Phone is fully charged, debug mode, stay awake, charge only. Using the USB on the back of my PC.

Running Windows Vista.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I tried the manual root last week. I set up ADB using the video on youtube and it recognized it then. I was having trouble downloading all the files so decided to wait for a more automated process, but like I said, it won't recognize my phone now.

You need to download rom manager (free version is ok) and make a backup after rooting before you change anything.

There are many roms that use sense, 2 popular ones are das bamf rom and perfect storm rom. Links to roms and kernels can be found here:

The Official Thunderbolt ROMs and Kernels Listing (Updated 4/18 1:30 PM CST) - xda-developers

You can read about these roms over there if you follow the links to their threads or you can look in our androidcentral root roms and hacks forums since there are threads for some of these roms here.

Instead of debloating myself i just use roms that are debloated and otherwise optimized. Many roms come with kernels or you can pick one out yourself just read and make sure they are compatible.

In order to change frequency to tweak battery life or cpu performance you need a program called setcpu (paid) or there are similar free apps but i'm not sure how well they work.

Figured it out. Deleted all the stuff I did when I attempted to manual root. Had to delete the environmental variables. My PC recognizes it now. However, I ran out of time so I'll have to root later.

Thanks!

Thanks for the help, first android phone, and all I've done since getting the thunderbolt on launch day is read about rooting and finally decided to take the plunge.

I just want to make sure I have the steps down in order.

1. Root with auto root from this post.
2. Purchase Titanium Backup and backup phone.
3. Download Rom
4. Clear Cache/ Davlik cache before install (how do you do this?)
5. Boot Rom
6. Restore Apps from backup

If you would please, let me know if that sums up everything.

Thanks for any other advice that you might have, I've been reading about this stuff a lot but somewhere among the 100's of forum threads I've read its all become a bit confusing.

Thanks again!

Everything finished fine. But I noticed that S-On ... shouldn't it be S-off?

you are the 2nd person that has mentioned this.
so you got through the entire process?
is the phone actually rooted and S is still on ?
when did you purchase the phone?

Sorry if i cant get to everyones questions fast enough im at work and i have to sneek away.
Those in the know of how this stuff works please feel free to help out and answer questions, i would greatly appreciate it.

Root, make sure Superuser is in your app folder, test it by downloading shoot me app and giving that app superuser permissions.

After root you should be at stock so you can get titanium backup but there won't be much to save with it. And just so you know, don't restore SYSTEM DATA with titanium backup!! only user apps and data.

(Read the sticky by cyber warrior on creating backups and flashing roms first)
Next, download rom manager, give it su permissions, flash recovery, and create a nandroid back up.

After that, you can download and flash roms or kernels, just be sure to have that backup on your sd card in case you have a problem.

Always clear cache and dalvik before flashing, and if you are flashing from 1 rom to a different rom, do a full data wipe as well.

Then you can restore your user apps/data with titanium backup (there is a setting to filter out system data in TB so you won't have to guess which is which).
