Available Now: Droid X 2.3.340 Update Discussion (Not Gingerbread!)

VZW Tech Info

I got on the phone with VZW to see if there was a way to push it out to me since i had not received it yet. He did try to find a way but could not since it is being released by MOTO.

He did state however, that MOTO said they are releasing it in 12 HR batches and that if you didn't get it at first it should come again. Then when they have cycled through all the batches it should be available to everyone anytime.

If this is true, I would like to thank my 2yr old son for not sleeping in this morning so I could get the update before 6:30. :)

I checked for software update this morning when I woke up. Downloaded and installed no problem over my wifi. When I got to work told my friends who also have X's and it says theirs is up to date. I think my timing was just good I guess before they seemed to suspended the update. I hope there isn't anything wrong with the update. Oh well guess we'll see...

its not uncommon for an update to get pulled shortly after being released just to make sure things are going swimmingly for early adopters. give it some more time, and im sure it will be back in the wild. either that, or someone will release the manual download at some point

There is no such thing as a roll out or batch update for the x. The update can be pulled manually from the server when the files are available. Obviously the files are not available right now. More than likely what happened was that MOTO released it to the test users and it exploded onto the internet. The files were pulled from the server until feedback can be received from the test group. Look for it to be available towards the end of the week or around next Monday. VZW usually posts the pdf update file to the web about two weeks before the update. Remember there is NO ROLLOUT.

The update is amazing. New search function on the dialer. Kind of like Google Instant. It looks up numbers as you type. I think that's new.

Actually there is.

Google did this with the nexus, they staged the roll out so not all phones were updated to froyo at once. The same thing with the droidx going to froyo, not all phones were updated at once.

They did an initial roll out this morning and have (seemingly) yet to stage another batch to update.

Love that feature... I rarely type in numbers, usually just use the contacts, but this is a cool bonus.

I thought initially that the update was only for people who were in the testing group, but it seems that a lot of people not in that group also received that update. Nonetheless, it seems Motorola is waiting for the feedback, and by my guess, we probably won't see the update for another week. We just got the update PDF yesterday, and Verizon usually puts that up about a week before the official update is released. Let's just hope Moto did a good job fixing the bugs, and we'll get the update sooner rather than later.

Yup, they do do batching and roll out.

Chaos chaos lol.

For those who HAVE received the update successfully, report all positives and negatives associated with it.

No, it is in a new section right between the dialer tabs and the keypad buttons. It shows your most recent call (incoming or outgoing) and if you type in a number it will pull one that matches from your contact list or recent calls even if it isn't a contact...kind of like the guy above mentioned..it is kind of like the Google Instant feature on the search engine. It is really cool.

This isn't the nexus one. My argument is and was with froyo that Droid x users and Droid 2 users can manually pull the update at any time once the files are made available. No other devices can do that. The files simply just aren't on the server right now. The users who downloaded it this morning manually did so. Only the email, text, notification of an update is rolled out.
