Bad news about ICS for the Thunderbolt

Where did you see that HTC already approved it and Verizon is testing it?

The article said it was in trouble because of being similar to the desire hd and is in the hands of HTC. It didnt say that HTC already approved it and is waiting on Verizon.

If you guys don't want to wait for ICS, you can always downlod Holo Launcher which will give you an ICS (like) experience. I'm using it right now, and it's similar to ICS on my tablet. It's got the look, allows you to make folders on your home pages, and has many of the ICS features.

If they formally announce that ICS for Thunderbolt is cancelled I will root for the first time ever. I want this bloatware off my phone.

Saw this posted in the comments section of the AC article regarding HTC statement explaining why Desire ICS was cancelled:

"The Desire HD has 1.5GB total. The HTC Thunderbolt 4G has 8GB total 4.5GB for OS and 3.5GB for Apps. So we should have plenty we have more then most the other devices that are planned to get an update including the HTC Amaze 4G which already has ICS this phone has only 2.5GB internal space"

The long and the short is that Thunderbolt WILL more than likely get ICS, as the Desire HD was held back by storage limitations, NOT hardware limitations.

Does Holo launcher do anything that Go launcher doesnt do?

Since I've rooted and frozen all the bloatware, I have seen no difference in performance or battery life. To me that confirms my long standing suspicion that the bloatware isn't using enough resources to make a difference either way. Point being; if you're going to root, do it for other reasons. :)

Storage differences aside, there is still the performance issue that HTC stated regarding their ICS testing on the Desire HD. Considering the Thunderbolt and Desire HD have the same amount of memory (768MB) and single core processor, I'd say it's a pretty thin line they're walking. ICS testing on the Thunderbolt could very well have the same result.

Per HTC from the article: HTC explains decision to drop Desire HD Ice Cream Sandwich update | Android Central

"Even after installing the update, there were other technical limitations which we felt negatively impacted the user experience.

We believe an update should always improve the user experience and carefully evaluate each update based on this criteria."

Finally, if ICS is imminent for the Thunderbolt, where are any leaks? Because in the past, we've typically seen them well in advance of any actual release. I could be reading it wrong and may be it's too soon yet, but the lack of any ICS leaks doesn't bode well IMO.

There is a beta aosp ics rom for the thunderbolt that has basically everything working except for data and mms... I can tell you that the thunderbolt has no problem running ics, in fact runs it even smoother than gingerbread. The thunderbolt is NOT the desire hd, it's update has never been in question. There have been no leaks because companies take their work seriously and do not want their private property being distributed on the internet. It's a huge risk for an employee/beta tester to leak something, they are putting their job and/or a huge fine on the line. We were told the update would come in July or August and last I checked verizon/htc has a whole month left to finalize and release it. If it doesn't come out by the end of august then we can get mad... But for right now just relax and be paient. Good things come to those who wait.

There used to be a guy in here who worked for Verizon and sometimes shared information on upcoming OTAs and other internal things. I was scrolling through old posts and couldn't find him. Anyone remember who I am talking about?

But isn't AOSP running vanilla ICS (no Sense)? Also, without an ICS RIL to have working data radios (that would use system resources), how is that a very good test of how well ICS would run on the Thunderbolt?

The ICS update for the Desire HD wasn't originally questioned either, but subsequent testing revealed to HTC that it wouldn't yield the best user experience, so they decided to scrap it. The Thunderbolt has virtually the same internals (CPU, GPU, memory) as the Desire HD with the exception of internal storage, so it's very likely HTC's testing will reveal the same thing with the Thunderbolt. I could be wrong, but it would seem the most logical conclusion based on the evidence at hand.

Mortiel? Looks like his last post here was back in early June.

As far as functionality is concerned, no it doesn't, but Holo Launcher does most (90-95% maybe?) of the things that Go Launcher does while giving you the ICS look. And maybe it's just me, but I feel like Google took the best parts of Sense and various launchers (like Go) and combined them with the new "ice" look to come up with ICS.

Yes, him. I wonder if a pm would bring any new information.

The RIL is just code to that allows the phone to communicate with Verizon's 3g and 4g towers... There's no way that it slows down a phone's ui it just enables you to use the Internet with Verizon's service.

And yes sense tends to run a little slower than aosp just because there's so much going on in it, and for that reason we probably will not get the full sense 4.0, but a slimmed down sense 3.6 that should run just fine on our devices

I also would venture to guess that if they were planning to axe the update, they would have done so at the same time as the Desire HD, not waited.

at first, I was really hyped about ICS. but it's taking so long, I don't even care if they ever release it. my phone has be seriously doing some really stupid crap since the last update, so I'm afraid of anything else OTA anyway. if they are this apprehensive about releasing it, then maybe that should give us a clue. I'm rooting my tbolt, poop on this action!!!

YES! The last OTA STUNK in my personal opinion. Didn't need it, regret taking it. This phone was perfect before it. Wish I could go back.

But therein lies the real point. The ONLY problem (again, IMO) our beloved Bolts have ever had was HTC and their OTAs. The hardware has been first-rate. The support - not so. OTAs have introduced more problems to my phone than they EVER solved.
