Bad Wi-Fi Range

I just noticed this issue today. soon as i step about 15 feet from my router IF that, i completely lose signal...never had taht issue with my blackberry or with my ipod. my 3g coverage doesnt seem to be the best either. anyone having a problem with that.

are you guys running speed tests to see if the actual speed is affected, or is it just a visual indicator on the wifi icon? maybe its just calibrated differently. i woudl run a speed test next to the router, then go to the room where you think it is showing weak signal, and run a speed test and compare. if speeds are the same, who cares? just a different calibration compared to other phoens,.

This issue is very frustrating! It's always something with HTC on just about every phone I've owned of theirs :/ But I keep coming back because they always have the best eye candy. I just wished they didn't allow things like this to slip through the cracks.

I really love the phone, but this issue is ridiculous - I have never experienced such poor Wi-Fi range in a device. I can't connect to Wi-fi at work today while every other device I owned had 0 issues, and downstairs in my house I barely get a signal when again every other device has 0 issues.

I hope HTC fixes this fast because this is a deal breaker. I was going to sell my Palm Pre this week but I will hold off now. Oh yeah, I wonder if I should return all my Android app purchases just in case, I already bought $30 worth.

My issue isn't just a visual indicator problem. In my kitchen, the connection would be very unstable and pause out while other devices were fine. At work, I can't get it to connect at all while my laptop, Pre, etc have 0 issues.

It is definitely not just a visual indicator problem. Read some of the earlier posts. There are lots of folks who did speed tests to verify this problem, my self included.

I wonder if they were having trouble with battery life and chose to lower the power for WiFi to compensate. I use wireless headsets in my office. They have power settings. On High, I can move throughout my home. On low, I am limited to the same floor or the room above my office. So, maybe the short range is due to power (which would be great because it could be adjusted).

I really hope this is the issue. They should give multiple power options for the wi-fi, as the current state is fine for some people and would save more battery life vs people like me who need wider range.

Just spoke with HTC tech support. They state that "they are aware of and monitoring the situation but that they have no work around at this time". That is not very encouraging.

Has anyone called HTC's help line. I'm at work and can't do it right now, but now that the iPhone4 is out, the EVO coverage will be weak, at best.

wow!
i got my evo june 4th. i was doing good until just this afternoon. now all of my apps stop working. they say there is a problem with the network. i looked and i'm just one bar on wifi.

what the heck?

heck, my phone is broken. i didn't notice an issue until today. now i can't use any software that requires a connection.

I am noticing that if the back of my evo is facing the wifi router and my hand is clear from the bottom 20% of the phone, i get 100% on my couch.

if I turn my phone 90 degrees so the right side of the phone is facing the router, and hold the phone as I normally would, I get 1 bar.

Note: I have not had any negative effects though. Things still work fine.

i sure hope they can quick push out an ota fix. otherwise i'll have to get something else

Not to be insensitive to your issue, but youve posted virtually the same thing over and over in this thread. We get it, your apps arent working and you might have to get something else. No need to repeat it time after time.

darrylb take it to sprint and see if they can help, they will probably just give you a new one, with all of your apps transferred, at least that is what they do for blackberries, back up your old/defective phone, and then place the backup on a brand new one. Or just switch to another phone if the issue is a deal breaker.

obviously we all know we can go back to sprint. does your wifi work? then lucky you.
i posted several times just in case someone had something good to say, like, "here is the fix, ... etc"

I saw the complaints so tested mine today. While only getting 1 bar, I'm still getting 6.6mbs download speed with 1.5 upload. Just as good as my iPad, so I think it is just a reporting issue likely fixable via software update.

Other than darrylb's, who may indeed have defective hardware and needing an exchange.

I got my WiFi to connect now. Apparently it wouldnt connect to an open network. Changed my security to WPA Personal and it connected. Although it is a bad signal. I get 1 bar and the room is directly across from me like 6-10 feet away.

It might better to start ur own thread then repeat off topic issues here. Also posting several times doesn't mean ur problem gets solved, it only guarantees u look like a troll.

Back to topic: why aren't any of the android sites reporting on this issue?

not helpful at all. get a life!
what is a forum for? my post were much more relevent than what you just posted. didn't you read the other guy's unfriendly reply to my post? you repeated the same thing. you look like the troll!

I too have fewer "bars" than my iPhone did in my house, but I've yet to see a performance issue. Perhaps this is just a graphical issue and that's it.
