Bad Wi-Fi Range

This probably my last post, but I may check back, but I returned my Evo today. Went to 2 Sprint stores, reported issue, no "good" response from them, nor HTC.

So did you return the phone because of the wifi or other issues? With Sprint's 30-day guarantee I think we have some time to let them address. The phone hasn't even been out a week... if they're just acknowledging the issue that's pretty good for one week.

@chriscic ...mostly the wifi, and some others. My situation is unique so I had to do something this week.....and, the iPhone preorder, if I'm going that way, is coming up very soon. Galaxy S coming in 1 month. Lots of 3gs's going up for sale. Lots of options......... :-) Otherwise, I would have kept it the whole month.

Hopefully its just a Software Fix..if its a Hardware issue..Man I will be sorta pissed...anyway I dont have any issue with my Wifi on my Evo..It actually works pretty good..My PALM PRE was horrible...knock on wood...lol

Arg, after reading through 25 pages, I believe that I am going to hold off the on evo for a little while. This phone has potential and with htc looking into the issue hopefully this can be resolved soon.

The defect in Wi-fi is not JUST a software issue for some people. My EVO is bad and I will be exchanging it on Saturday. I compared my EVO to a Samsung Moment and 2 EVOs in a sprint store. The moment had the best at -50 mDb, while the other 2 EVOs were around -60 to -70 range. My Evo was sadly in the -70 to -80 range, and I didn't see nearly as many wireless networks as the 2 EVOs in store and the Moment.

I returned my Evo yesterday as well, i couldnt deal with the wifi issue, and missing calls due to service being terrible out here. So ported over to t-mobile and got the Mytouch Slide, works like a champ. Strangely its just as snappy as the Evo....

I am curious with all those people with problems with WIFI. Where did you get your phone? Sprint Corp, Best Buy, Radio Shack, Telesales or wherever? I am trying to see if there was a bad bunch sent to different areas and different stores. I got mine at a Sprint Corporation store on DAY 1, and have decent WIFI with my EVO and not many problems (knock on wood).

I have a question for you guys. When you have good wifi signal is your browser slow?

I am sitting next to my routher getting 10mbps download speeds through speednet app but when i go into my browser it takes a good 15-20 seconds for the webpage to open. Wheter a regular webpage or a mobil page.

Any suggestions?

I'm about 12 feet from my wireless access point. Using mobilespeedtest.com:

EVO, 1 MB file test: 5063 5063 Kbps
Dell Laptop, 1 MB test: 10256 Kbps
EVO, 3G, 1MB test: 906 Kbps

For a phone, I don't think that's bad at all. I'm showing full bars on the wi-fi signal strength meter, btw.

It's a D-Link Air-Plus G Wireless Access point; 11G only.

Hi - I'm having the same issue.

Sitting on my couch about 20' from the router, I'm getting 'poor' wifi signal. My laptop and my wife's iPhone 3GS in the same location on the same network showing a much better connection. Speedtest.net test to the same server show the Evo performing at 1/3 - 1/2 the speed of my other devices.

I like the phone and Sprint's plans, but inability to have a decent connection to wifi could be a deal killer. I'm in a 4g city, but it's still spotty - especially indoors - so wifi is still extremely important.

Hopefully this is something they can fix. Otherwise I think I'll have to check out the 30-day return policy.

Out of curiosity - does the Droid Incredible have this same issue?

if this is a hardware issue, will it be covered under warranty by HTC? I don't plan on getting the $7 TEP warranty, but if i do, will there be a deductible to exchange my EVO later on?

Well I'm picking up my phone today from BestBuy. And I have been closely reading through all of the posts on here about the bad wifi signal. I'm having my doubts, but I will still take the plunge. I just hope that either A) I won't have these issues, or at least not as bad as others, or B) If I do, then it will be soon that the problem is addressed and fixed by HTC. There is still no definate answer as to wether this is a hardware or software issure. Which makes me even more reluctant. I will post results on here like others when I can do some speed testing at home on my wireless network.

FYI, just got this response from HTC:

"Hi, I'm Victor, and I will be glad to assist you today. At this time we are looking into the issue with the WiFi connection issue with the Evo 4G device. At this time we have no information about any updates that will be released to help resolve this issue. If an update is released for your device you will get a notification on your device that an update is available for it. It may also depend on how offer you have your accounts sync with your device as well if you do not have anything running on the device. You can charge your battery the following way to see if that helps improve the battery life on your device. 1. Connect the phone to the charger and charge the device until the LED turned green with the phone powered ON 2. Disconnect the phone, and power it off. 3. Reconnect the phone to the charger, and charged the device until the LED turns green again. 4. Disconnect the phone, power it on, and then power it off. 5. Reconnect the phone to the charger and charge until the LED turns green again. 6. Power on and use. If you have any other questions feel free to reply."

.........kind of a contorted battery fix....it did help. No wifi help.

I find that WiFi connectivity improves substantially if I disable Bluetooth. Has anyone else experienced this?

I got victor too, they seem to be dancing around the issue though.

When I called yesterday to HTC, they didn't even acknowledge this to be a known issue ;p. He just said to try replacing the phone if a hard reset doesn't work and if the new phone has the same exact issue to call back.

in step 13, do you see the two pressure contacts to the right of the chip (gold colored). So if you are looking at the back cover it would be on the bottom right.

Ya your palm will do a good job covering it there.

yeah to me that looks to be at the bottom of the device, exactly where your hand would almost completely cover the wifi antenna. you guys should do some tests setting the phone on a table and seeing how much the wifi signal increases. i know with my nexus, it gets great wifi signal, but the antenna is at the top. if i artifically cover that area, the wifi signal drops a LOT, even close to the router. perhaps HTC antennas are just very sensitive to being covered.

I've tested this, and you are correct. The kickstand also may not help. But my testing showed, that even in the best positions, it was a little week. But pulling your hand from the bottom back side of the phone can increase the signal by up to 10 dbm.....and that's alot!
