After a few more days experimenting, I've found that the trouble was that Google's location services was keeping the phone awake way too often even when the screen was off. A simple reboot fixed that problem without me having to disable location services altogether. Yesterday with WiFi and 4G off I was only dropping ~1% an hour like it should. Last night the SMS service kept it awake b/c it got hung up on receipt of a MMS message (I didn't know until I checked this morning) and a reboot fixed that too.

In short, any excessive battery drain you might see is likely due to background services still running and many times can be solved by a simple power cycle of the phone without having to disable features/services altogether.

i ended up turning off google location history and location reporting under google settings. seems to be doing better.

Fifteen hours on with almost six hours of screen time. First charge.

Take a look to see if you are switching between different radio modes (3g to 4g to roaming) that could do it. if you have a Wi-Fi connection it could use up less battery as you transmit data.

Deleting widgets alone for these applications will not stop the application from pulling the data; the application iteself must be uninstalled or killed temporarily with a Task Manager or App Killer.
