Battery life

This has been my results more or less that past 2 days. 6 hours and 39 mins. Also I have forced 90 hertz on from the developer settings but i don't have always on screen turned on. Lots of YouTube, Netflix and I also tracked 2 workouts.

Totally happy with battery life on my 4 xl.

ok here is today....

12 hours since charged to 95% (not 100%), no charging at all since

52% left

Screen usage 2h 25m

So I am thinking if I had GPS turned off this would be better but still I will get 4.5-5 hours of SOT

I am purposefully not charging this phone

I would love 7 or 8 hours of SOT no doubt but i am not hamstrung with this phone

I'm happy with my results and for me 6-6.5 hours of SOT is more than sufficient
I also have not been charging it during the day on purpose to test the battery. I work from home some I'm around chargers all day too. But glad to know it I have to go out I can still count on the pixel 4 xl.

Honestly if I'm spending 6+ hours of SOT using my phone every day then that's a problem.

4 hours SOT and still 50% left... so I think the battery is excellent ... don't know why a lot of review got only 4 -4.5 SOT.. I think I easily get at least 6 hours SOT. Screenshot_20191030-175600.jpeg

Wouldn't be surprised if they are using it super heavy like streaming music, gps, watching YouTube and Netflix a couple of hours and more. Remember that gets them views and probably tons of upvotes from then iOS community which is huge.

I leave Always on Display off. I was running around with Smooth Display and Motion Sense on. I turned them off because I don't notice a difference with Smooth Display off anyways. After 15 hours and a 3 hour gym session on bluetooth, I was at 75% battery. For some reason, I don't like the phone illuminating if I pick it up just to jump in my truck. Motion Sense isn't great in that regard.

I'm not a gamer, nor am I a heavy user --I also charge it in the car because I use Android Auto--and have been pleased with the battery life. This is also my third day with the phone.

Honestly that sounds very lackluster for the XL version. I would be scared to death of the smaller one.

Not to me it doesn't. Not even a little.

I get way more battery life than I need to get through my day.

I understand that your day may be very different than mine, and maybe you have good reason to be concerned. But as usual, all the furor about battery life is a non-issue for me.

Well show my a car charger that actually charges a phone... every one I’ve ever had just basically maintained the battery

Need to get a better charger perhaps. Mine have always topped the phone up nicely.

I primarily use Android auto when driving my own car, and whenever it's available in whatever rental car I end up with, and I have never had any issues with my phone getting charged right up full.

The cigarette lighter charger I use is one I got at the Verizon store, and it also charges my phones right up.

Using the phone on WiFi should yield better SOT results as opposed to on a mobile network.

When I had the Priv, which had the worst processor I can think of (SD808) if I optimized a bunch of stuff and had it on WiFi, I could stretch the SOT to 5 - 5.5 hours of SOT, maybe even up to 6 if using non intensive apps. But on mobile network, it was tough to push past 4.5 hours.

Well, based on the results I'm reading the battery life doesn't seem like such a big issue for many that don't top off.

Off charger since last night, btw it was at 100% approx 11pm and still 100% at 5am

Standby power usage was nil

Yeah it's a huge jump and overall I'm really pleased. The Pixel 4 is a fantastic smartphone. Here's my day 5 impressions:

- This thing is warp speed compared to my OG Pixel. Even gesture nav is quite nice to use because of the fluidity and responsiveness. On my previous device I'd reverted back to three button nav. I still think the back gesture needs work though in Android 10.
- Battery life, compared to my previous device, is light years ahead. Last night I went to bed with it on 37% - I got up at 7:30am and went to bed at 10:40pm. SOT was on target to exceed 4 hours. I have no issues with battery life at this stage. Having said that, I did have one night where I forgot to plug in and it dropped from 50% to 37% overnight. Something went wrong here but I think it might've been a one off.
- The display looks great at lower brightness levels compared to my previous phone. Using it on my couch at night is nicer.
- I have the standard size phone and even this is on the edge of too big. But it's ok.
- Face unlock is way better than a fingerprint sensor. It's near instantaneous. It's not perfect but on balance I find it works more consistently than my previous fingerprint sensor. I wouldn't go back.
- I'm a video producer and photographer so phone cameras typically underwhelm me. I haven't had a chance to really push this thing yet but, so far, in the right conditions I think the Pixel 4 is quite impressive. When it nails portrait mode it's really cool and I've already nabbed a couple of nice shots. I think the video stabilisation is fantastic and the overall video image quality is nice. But people shouldn't kid themselves that these are going to replace "professional" dedicated cameras. They're still miles away in a number of key areas. Smartphones are great consumer cameras though.
- I'm not convinced by motion sense gestures. They're flaky in my experience and need improvement. But I do like the way Soli is integrated with alarms and face unlock. This bit works well.
- 6GB of RAM helps a lot. I'm not left wanting more RAM.
- The design is lovely in its own way. I like Google's "IKEA-esque" design language in their products. I think it's more playful and not so serious. I have the white version and love the coloured button contrasting with the black outer edge. The first party cases are great too.
- The speakers are a massive improvement over my last phone, both in terms of volume and overall sound quality. I can even detect a hint of bass! This has probably been one of the nicest surprises.
- I think 90hz displays are a little over-hyped. I like it but it's not a game changer.
- I quite like the squeeze to access the assistant
- Haptics are nice in this phone
- The next gen assistant isn't available in Australia yet. Sigh.
- I didn't think I'd use it but I've modified the default theme slightly - just the icons and colour tint. It's nice to be able to personalise the device like this without being overwhelmed by too many options.
- NFC noticeably improved.
- I'm getting a wireless charger today and I can't wait to use it.
- Did I mention this thing is fast?

I'm so glad you are loving it! I get what you are saying about the cameras - they're good but definitely not a replacement for real ones! That being said, though, you're right in saying that Portrait Mode is purely beautiful under the right conditions.

Do you guys think that the regular Pixel 4 got a small battery because 1) Google didn't WANT a bigger battery (i.e. to incentivize charger sales, more frequent upgrades, etc.) or 2) Google COULDN'T fit a bigger battery because their design capabilities are subpar (i.e. Google has always been known to pack less hardware in their phones than some competitors?)

I'm curious to know what people think.

I would lean more on the 2nd point. Probably didn't think too much about designing the phone around fitting a larger battery. They also probably caught off guard with the iPhone bumping the battery size and focusing more on battery this time. That got ever reviewer talking about battery as the main point and Google had no answer this late in the cycle.

Because they are cheap with the Hdw.

Google is about hyping you up with BS software and you get updates 1st.

...Google is about hyping you up with BS software...

As compared to whom? Samsung? I recall all the nonsensical, half-working, "features" they put on the last one I had. Saying that Google "hypes up BS...software" is a bit hyperbolic. Soli was released prematurely, I'll give you that, but the rest of the software package is sublime and practical.

What kind of Hdw upgrades came in the new pixel

A bigger battery ?

And you know Dauym well Samsung has nothing to do with pixel.
Google does.

I think Google is doing something similar to apple. Proving that a spec sheet doesn't matter.

Obviously even the smaller battery on the pixels aren't making a difference from what I've been reading. I'm seeing great battery results.

Same with the ram. Apple uses less ram but their phones don't need it. Because they're optimized very well. Google's phones, same thing.
