Bionic's still coming, is defintely new hardware - XT875

wow step away from the caffeine and get some fresh air. let's not turn this into a crackberry storm thread please

Wow, that is what I was thinking. Except that CK actually used the word "apologize", something I don't rember seeing on crackberry.com.

Whoa, WHOA, WHOA & WHOA ! I think I've been pretty objective. Speaking only for myself and even in the event you weren't even referring to me, CK and my disagreements have not been attacks AND you are falsely stating the time line of this device. The damn thing was just announced at CES in January, not a year ago. I don't know how you do math but that's less than 6 months ago, and then it was announced for release in the second quarter. Guess what? Second quarter hasn't even ended yet. So don't be talking how late they are when we're now hearing August. Big freakin' whoop it's two months late and it is still revolutionary given the lapdock whether or not you like the implementation. And it still will have an entirely different set of incredible specs combined than anything else out yet.

Defend CK's opinions all you like, but I'll be damned if I waste any time researching a poster to see how honest he is. But I'm also not going to allow anyone to get away with inaccuracies like yours.

Okay, rant off. No hostiles here anymore. :)

no, i wasn't referring to you. as you will note, i quoted only Droid800's post, and did not quote any of yours. i recognize the "disagreements" between you and CK to be more light-hearted banter (if not outright flirtation ;)). also, i started out by saying "dude", and you've made it quite clear you are NOT a "dude"... :p [as an aside, contrary to what my username suggests, i am a "dude" - my daughter's name is kate...]

as for the timeline, you are correct as to the "official" announcements. however, in June 2010, Sanjay Jha promised a dual core phone before the end of 2010. didn't happen. and, shortly after his announcement (if not before), unofficial leaks of the development of this device began. so, it has been close to a year that some of us have been following the development of this device.

as for delays, i think we can all agree they have occurred. the Bionic was debuted to the public at CES, and was said to be coming in Q2. Jha actually stated, in Feb i believe, that the Bionic was "still on track" for a Q2 release. but then rumors surfaced of flaws in the Bionic, which Moto denied. but, lo and behold, the Bionic was scrapped. the phone that is now being released as the Bionic, is actually the Targa, which was already in development by Moto (and targeted for a Q3 release). it's a completely different device. luckily for Moto, it hadn't officially announced the Targa yet. so, Moto was able to "spin" the Etna cancellation and say that they were tweaking the Bionic and changing the form factor, in response to "consumer demands." i call BS, but whatever... regardless, you maybe should do some research before claiming that i have given "inaccuracies" - i don't go off half-cocked, and everything i have stated is, in fact, accurate.

you and i may have different definitions of "revolutionary." the webtop came out with the Atrix. and the other specs of the Targa, while impressive, are not what i would call revolutionary - they are very similar to the Atrix. consider a recent study, released a couple months ago, which noted that the "life" of smartphones currently is about 6-8 months, before they are supplanted with new and improved tech. by the time the Targa is released in Aug/Sep, its specs will be 6 months old. on top of that, we are looking at quad-core phones being released within months after the Targa comes out. to me, all of this counters against any conclusion that the Targa is "revolutionary" when it comes out. but, that's just my opinion - you and others may disagree, and i completely respect that.

as i've said many times before, i'm not trashing the Targa. right now, it's still at the top of my list for my next phone. but, my enthusiasm for this device has been tempered in recent months and weeks, given the problems, delays, and revelation of specs that, while impressive, don't blow me away when considering what other manufacturers are doing (e.g., the rumored Nexus 4G). all i'm saying is that i'm going to be careful before jumping on the Targa bandwagon. i love Moto devices, and i hope that when its finally released, the Targa will be worth having for 2 years.

Wow almost 200 pages on this thread and about 7 posts with any substance. Pretty sweet. Almost forgot why I check these threads.

given the recent rumors of a 3rd revision to the device (assuming they are talking about tweaks being made before release), we probably won't see any substantive info for a couple weeks or so - not until they get the revisions in the hands of the testers.

Come on man, don't be like that. The forum is being used for its intended purpose: Conversation.

If all you want is announcements, there's twitter and google for that. :)

Do you know if the supposed 3rd revision has actually been confirmed? I haven't seen and substantive evidence yet, other than the general lack of information about the Bionic.

nope, other than what Kellex posted. i posted on HoFo, asking whether the 3rd rev. was going to be prior to release, or whether that is referring to development beginning on the next generation (ie, Bionic 2). wnrussell, Winston, et al. haven't responded. so, looks like it's still up in the air...

this was just posted by kbman over at HoFo. while he is talking about the Atrix 4G having an unlockable bootloader, maybe this is the what the 3rd rev is about???

Its not an engineering build that kennethpenn has, it is a prerelease retail build.
He also has a secured stock device. This does work and it does require adb to use the fastboot oem unlock, like the Xoom.

This is very exciting news for a lot of reasons!

That's the nature of pre release threads. With the absence of any new info what else is there to talk about? Topics of tiered pricing to pentile will abound. The occasional arguement will erupt, the insults will fly, a voice of reason ends the fighting, thread goes back on topic of nothing new, people get bored, tension mounts with no new info, Motorola becomes public enemy number one, threats of jumping to other phones begins, loyalty erodes, phone is announced, everyone forgets what the heck transpired over the last 6 months and begin hooting and hollering.

Standard everyday pre release thread. They are all the same :)

I'm willing to bet you won't see a quad core phone until mid to late q2 2012.

I agree, we are just getting dual core phones and OMAP 4470 a 1.8 dual core is coming out in Q1 2012, OMAP 5430/2 is coming Q3 2012 and is a 2GHZ dual core, but we are getting quad cores in a few months after august? I think people are expecting the release of these WAY too early, not to mention we are just getting software to handle these dual cores.

I sure hope you're right. That would definitely be a revision worth waiting for.

So this is a little off-topic, but does anyone have any clue as to when we'll start seeing 28nm Cortex-A15 SoC's in released devices? I'm not sure if there are any A9 quad cores, but I would imagine a dual-core A15 would provide more than enough horsepower for where Android is going in the next few years, while sipping battery. I know that dual cores can be great for multitasking, with one core running background processes to keep the other free for the currently running application, but I'm just not sure I see the need for quad cores until we start seeing multithreaded apps. Think back a few years to Windows pc's, quad cores came out well before the software could really take advantage of it, and for some time you would see better performance from a dual core, because it typically had a much lower TDP while running a higher clock speed. It wasn't until we started seeing all kinds of software supporting multiple threads, and processors like Intel's Core series that supported TDP sharing among cores that quad cores really came into there own. Until then, they were mainly just something cool to market that didn't actually provide any tangible benefits to users, while having a higher price and power consumption.

I know its off topic, but with all this talk of future superphones, I figured it was appropriate.
