Camera lens cover - Official HTC response!

Hello,

After hearing all of the reviewers worry and comment about the possibility of the Evo 3D's lens cover getting scratched, I got to thinking... Why not ask HTC about the material used. So I emailed them. I am very impressed with HTC and their support responses. They go of their way to be thorough and do not seem to use canned responses. I am thrilled with the response. I have pasted it below for all of you along with attached images. Yes, they sent me two images. However, the quality quality are not very good, they were taken with an HTC Desire according to the image properties, not the Evo 3D.

For those who want a summary:

- HTC will not divulge what the lens cover is made from siting proprietary reasons. (understandable)
- HTC did testing of the the lens cover giving it much more abuse than they expect it to reasonably get. They had a hard time damaging it.

Quoted email from HTC to me:

"I understand you are concerned that the camera on the Evo 3D may be easy to scratch. I am unable to answer part of your question - the material of the camera lens - because that is considered proprietary information. So I did the next best thing.

Here at HTC Technical Support we like to break things so we know how to fix them. We normally don't apply this logic to the camera lens of an unreleased device but we made an exception for you. I have attached two images to this ticket. This is the result of three agents actively trying to scratch the lens. Without going completely berserk we were able to create a tiny scratch on the camera lense cover but to do this one of our agents went way, way beyond normal use - like your keys rubbing against it in your pocket, etc.

Comparing the phone in person to images on the web I think the web pictures tend to make the camera lens look more protrusive than it really is.

To review these images please log in to the ContactUS system using the instructions below as if you were going to reply, then scroll down to my message. To the right you will see the images for your review.

You can actually tell in the 8 megapixel image that we were able to scratch the paint at the edge of the lense cover with our attack on the device, however the only scratch we were able to make on the cover itself (on the bottom right of the bottom lense) was so minor my camera didn't register it.

To send a reply to this message or let me know I have successfully answered your question log in to our ContactUs site using your email address and your ticket number <support case number removed>.

Sincerely,

XXXXXX <I took out support engineer's name, not sure if he would like it put here>

I hope you guys find this helpful too! :)
very good

Just to put out there... I got an email from phantom skinz for their EVO 3D stuff since I had originally planned on getting them (not anymore). But I noticed they sell a kit w/ the camera protection as well for anyone that is interested still.

But I'm going naked with the phone, see how this thing works out =)

I am glad the information I posted from HTC has was found helpful. I am getting my Evo 3D tomorrow and I'm pretty excited about it. If any of you experience issues with damage around the camera lens from regular use, please let us all know. Thanks.

Its not scratches that concern me its constant smudging of the bottom lenses via just using the device.

Hmmm..

My 4G camera lens cracked in the first 2 months. It also had lots of micro scratches all over it. i'm not sure how I feel about this.

My little girl dropped it about 6 inches off a little coffee/end table. The table is not solid, I think mostly plastic, and it cracked the glass on back.

Odd though, it wasn't really a surface crack - I couldn't feel it. I wonder how many layers there are here.

I just wish the glass had a slightly raised bevel around it like my Nexus did. The metal ring was like .5mm higher than the glass, so I never worried about scratching it.

Has anybody actually gone with a screen protector style skin over the lens of a camera before?
How bad was the distortion through the skin?

Phantom skins makes one for the EVO 3D. It protects the screen and has one specifically for the cameras. It smdoesnt cover the actual eye of the camera but everything around it. I got mine today and it was easy to put on and you can't even notice it. Time will tell if it help or not.

Well they proudly tout the Gorilla Glass on the front, so why not do the same for the rear?

Where does HTC specifically tout that they use Gorilla Glass by Corning for the front display?

I have an EVO3D myself and would like to see this.

Many thanks.
