"can't reach google at the moment" while online for voice typing

I had this issue recently. Rebooting did not help.

I un installed it and re-installed (or at least uninstalled the updates and re-installed). That restored it to normal for me.

It happened the same thing to my Samsung galaxy S4. I tried to search from internet but no solution works. Finally I can figure by myself.
1. Turn on Wifi
2. Go to App then Google Play Store
3. Search Google Voice and install. The logo is blue color with the phone, totally different with microphone. You must have both in order to work all the apps: maps, navigator, google search, etc.
4. After installation, go back to text message and try. It should work.

Try this:

Settings -> Language & Input -> Google Voice Typing (tap the settings icon to the right) -> Download offline speech recognition.

Now your N4 won't be trying to contact Google's servers each time you use voice input!

I have just purchased a Galaxy Note 2 from Bell Canada. Same problem. After pressing the Microphone icon, nothing happens as usual. The keyboard disappears and is replaced by a white outline of a microphone. It does not turn red and will not not recognize any speech. The red microphone seems to just randomly turn itself on and off. Yesterday it seemed that if i swiped my finger from the bottom left corner up to the mike icon, this would turn the mike red and i could get speech recognition for a few seconds. Then the message about not connecting to Google. Today I tried that and nothing. Then i discovered that if the white mike outline is there, I could activate voice recognition by pressing the volume button on the side of the phone. This would work for a few seconds. i was really impressed by how well the program could quickly type exactly what i was saying. Then i get the non-connection message and it's game over. i talked to the folks at the phone store and they had no ideas.:(:'(

Here's how I fixed mine. Even though I already had offline speech recognition (preinstalled) I deleted it and reinstalled it (US English). And now it works again!!!

No more long wait followed by a message that "Google cannot be reached at the moment"

Thanks for the hint that got me there!

I just got my Nexus 5 and was surprised to find the offline voice typing not working. All the settings were correct and still getting the same "can't reach google at the moment" error. Eventually found out that in Settings > Language & Input > Google Voice Typing setting > Choose input languages, the entry was 'Automatic'. As soon as I switched it to English (US), offline voice typing works!

Switching to English (US) did the trick! Shame on Google for pretending to offer every language on the planet (UK and Canada versions are not supported???) while only recognizing US English.Good thing I didn't have to actually change my accent to make this fix:)

Yeah whenever I have had issues like this, re-installing the service has always fixed it.

Go to "manage apps" in settings, and go to the app. It should give you the option of uninstalling updates at the very least. You do not have to completely uninstall it...just roll it back some and then update it again.

I got this message when I used a app to block my microphone, soon as unblocked msg went away, be nice if the error msg would say can't access microphone or something

Uninstalling the Google search updates resolved my issue as well. The difference in my case was that this problem occurred in a custom android app with built-in speech recognition. Strange that the problem occurred on my Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and not my Google Nexus 7. Would have thought just the opposite. Hmm.

I had to tweak the solution a bit to get it to work for me on my new Samsung Galaxy S5 that was having the same issue:

I noticed when I went into Languages, I had mine set for English (Canada) yet, Google Voice Typing default dictionary was English (US).

As an aside I don't get the difference unless you're from Texas,NJ, or Boston, we all pretty much sound the same (except for when us Canucks say aboot or "eh" lol).

I added the English (US) as my primary language (Language and Input>Google Voice Typing>Languages>English:(US), and now it works fine.

Hopefully this helps someone else! :)

Hi all,

I found this problem as well and think have discovered what is causing it.
Basically, Google voice search cannot understand you. I found that if i talked slowly and said 'Hello', it would pick it up and successfully search for it, whereas if I talked too quickly it would come up with the message 'can't reach Google at the moment'.

Unfortunately we are all going to have to wait for an update to fix this, but if downgrading the app works for you then do that if you want.

I think you're understanding it wrongly. Google did understand us: the spoken text is correctly transcribed. Only then it says that it can't reach Google.

This worked great for me thank you.
