I actually got my Captivate on Friday night at our local AT&T store. My husband's co-worker got his hands on one Thursday night. The rep at the store did say that they were told they could go ahead and start selling them. My contract was up in a couple of days, but they went ahead and renewed it, so I could get it for the $200 price. I've been on an unlimited data & text message plans for regular phones, so I had to change to a Smartphone data plan (we checked my usage and I've been under 200mb for over a year), and adjusted my text message plan (though I go beyond 200 text messages, now that I'm on Google Talk all the time, anyone I need to talk to is on there). So at the moment, my cellphone bill will be less than what I'd been paying (a little over $70), we'll see how my data runs in the first month.
So far, I'm loving the phone. I had considered the Dell Streak for the past 4 or so months, but I drooled over the Galaxy S phones when they first showed up in the tech news. I am sooo glad I decided to go back to getting one of these beautiful Samsung devices. The screen is crisp. I was wanting a device big enough to see my comic books on it, and this one does a wonderful job. I really don't need the Streak. I have small hands, and the Captivate is still kinda big, it's definitely nowhere near the size of the Streak. I can handle it easily with as thin as it is.
Make sure when you get yours: Update Google Maps. Go through using it to give you directions somewhere, and you'll then need to download the Voice directions, and then that will be setup.
The Samsung skin isn't bad at all - you have 7 screens to add widgets to, and you can sweep all the way to the one you want with the bubbles at the top. You also have 4, seemingly unchangeable widgets at the bottom, including a POP3 email button. I don't have POP3, I have Gmail accounts - my personal and my work account we use a Google Domain, so I'm set there. We found when you're in the Applications, hit the Menu button and Edit, and then you can change the 4 widget buttons at the bottom of the screen. We moved Gmail to my Email button. Also in the Applications, hit Menu & go to View Type - there's a Customizable Grid - I moved all my useless AT&T crap to the last page. Out of sight, out of mind, out of accidental clicking distance. The Contacts has also been skinned (as my husband complains), but it's not that big of a deal to me, since this is my first Android device (besides running Android off of my storage card on my old phone).
The Samsung Media Player & Video player are awesome. I was lamenting that I'd have to go through and change my media library to MP3's (like my husband has been doing for his Nexus One) and lo & behind, it plays .wma files perfectly. It's definitely a nicer setup than the stock Android Media Player. Videos are crisp - I only tested a .avi that I had, and it was great.
16GB of internal space, I was very stoked, plus that I have a 16GB microSD card my husband bought me a year or so ago. So much room I don't know what to do with it, but I may start loading more videos more often. I'm happy to have a normal headphone jack again - I've been using the HTC Touch Pro (AT&T Fuze) for the past 2 years, and having to attach the mini USB dongle to use headphones has been a pain in the arse.
Other thoughts & finds: It is a little slow from time to time. I'll touch something and it takes it a few seconds to work. The touch buttons on th bottom of the phone sometimes aren't responsive right away. I have to touch them a few times to get them to work. The battery life, so far, is great. I'm currently leaving it on wireless when I'm at home - I figure that will help with data usage, plus it's just plain faster. My Fuze, using the wireless even for a little bit drained the sucker. But right now it seems that the battery life on the Samsung Captivate is better than the Nexus One running Froyo, but I haven't taken it out of the house for a day at work just yet.
