Changes to Sprint Premier Program

Sprint tweeted this morning about the data plans, but that all smartphones will be subject to the $10/month premium like the Evo/Epic/Shift.

I think we should admit that since new devices have not gone up in price, the carriers may have been eating it in the pocket book over the past couple years with the down economy. Compare what a $200 device can do now vs what a $200 device could do three years ago....I had a Samsung Instinct...nuff said.

It's difficult as a consumer to deal with price hikes, but now more people will be helping foot the bill for 4G expansion, and possibly more to come with actual carrier service quality which really hasn't improved very much over the past couple years if you compare it to how much better the devices have become in the same time.

Now that you bumped up the price....bring on the Iphone 5 mfers!

I respectfully disagree. Electronics constantly go down in price. Flat screen TV's for example. Technology is constantly becoming cheaper. Companies don't lose money. Vzw did it so Sprint is doing it. They do it because they can. Simple as that.

Really? Everything I've seen says it appears when you activate a new smartphone.

Sent from my HTC EVO 4G.

If you already have a smartphone on your plan and buy one off of here or ebay or craigslist or something and you activate it then you won't incure the new $10 charge. Only if you sign a new contract or didn't previously have a smartphone on your plan.

I guess it's not a huge deal, because I'm already paying for it, and I'm the only one on my plan that ever upgrades.

Computers also cost a lot less than they did 3 years ago, and do a lot more. I can buy a netbook for like $200 today that is more powerful than the mid range laptops of 3 years ago ($600 to $800 range).

Car (and home) stereos are the same way. So are tv's, bluray players, game consoles (look at the current PS3 and Xbox and compare the specs and prices to 3 years ago), digital cameras/camcorders, and just about every other electronic gadget I can think of.

Is there an electronic gadget that does not get better and cheaper over time? I doubt the carriers are paying more for these phones than they were 3 years ago. They are almost certainly paying less. Now that these phones are mainstream and the carriers are buying more of them at once, they have to be getting them cheaper than they were when smartphones were only for geeks.

Sounds like I should just return my Evo and get back on my old phone and plan and ride my contract out. I am already on the $10 charge but if I have to pay $10 on a regular smartphone, then I don't think so.

Just a fyi, once you switch your plan on a upgrade. Regardless of returning the phone and resetting your upgrade/contract date. You will never get back a older plan. (Such as sero, etc...Just in case that was your plan)

Exactly.

Now, I told my fiance yesterday that when she upgrades to a new smartphone next year, our Sprint bill will be an additional $10 higher. I'm using an Epic 4G and already have the $10 charge. My concern is for people who have like 4 and 5 smartphones on a family plan. That's $50 there in additional surcharges? I mean really? I'd say for people on family plans and the like, that the extra charges get capped to a certain amount. I think $10 per line is a bit steep. Not complaining though, as Sprint has been very good to me.

Oh well, I am on the fence with Sprint now...i pay about 150 after taxes...The one perk I have that I cant get anywhere else is free unlimited incoming calling.

Let's just wait and see what Verizon's 4G service will add to their cost.. Also, at $10 per line it is still less than $30 per line at Verizon and doesn't include 4G or navigation/extras..
Sprint has been very very good to me as well and it would take alot to make me switch... I also love upgrading every year :)

Are you serious? It's $30 per LINE on VZW??? That's freakin' highway robbery right there. And no nav either?

I LOVE YOU SPRINT!

Looks like I'll be paying the early termination fee and jumping to Verizon. Sprint now has nothing to keep me loyal.

I joined for the Evo and with the promise that I could upgrade my phone yearly... that was the promise then that made me sign up. Maybe I'll pitch a bit of a fit to get out of the early termination fee.

Doggone money-grubbers. This kind of thing makes me sick.

This is a jacked up way of thinking. Sprint HAS to create perks for new cuwtomers because they need new customers! And there's no reason for Sprint old timers to carp, 10 + years and you get your yearly upgrade no matter the plan cost whereas new customers have to have a high MRC.

The Sprint Premier is a joke as it stands right now ... Basically everyone is a premier customer in one form or another .. It's only jacked up to people like you who have only been with the company for a minute ... It's called loyalty ... and those who stick with all the Good and Bad of a company should get the best perks .. I agree that a greenhorn should not have the same perks as a 10+ year soldier .. Why reward you when your going to be history tomorrow anyway ... Build loyalty with a company and see how you feel when they offer the same deal to a new customer as they do you.

( NOT raggin on you Cubfan .. Just trying to prove a point ) THIS proves my point entirely .. Apparently Cubfan jumped ship from a carrier to Sprint and As soon as there is an issue he is ready to jump ship to Verizon .. 3 different carriers within a year ... Why should this be rewarded?

I'm part of the Elite ones that have been with sprint as long as they have been a cellular company and I mostly stay cuz I know how to handle them to get What I need .. All companies have their problems why change to learn new ones.

I have always considered sprint premier to be a joke. Anyone and everyone was or can easily be a sprint premier customer. Atleast now being a loyal customer for over 13 years and having 5 lines will mean something.

Evo-lution

Actually, I've been a Sprint customer for some time... in another account (for my wife and son). I opened a new account for the Evo under my name. This plan was part of the reason for signing up, and I've been pleased with the treatment so far. Pretty easy to pay the fee to jump ship and get a new phone for around $200... especially if LTE comes to my area before Sprint's so-called 4G.

Well, I've been with Sprint constantly since 2005. I had to cut them beginning in 2001 because Afghanistan and Iraq don't HAVE Sprint service. Before 2001 I was with them, too. Using the logic I see on here from the 10+ crowd, I'm not a loyalist since I've only been with Sprint for 5 years, going on 6?

I think Sprint came up with the $10 surcharge because all of the people who bought a 4g phone knowing they could not receive 4g coverage b$$ched enough until Sprint said ok "everyone now gets a $10 charge if you have a smartphone". This is what happens when people b$$tch and moan about things that they intially had control over. If you didn't have 4g service in your area regardless of what was promised to you, you should not have signed the dang contract!!!!

This. I jumped from AT&T back around 2004 mostly because I had been young enough and stupid enough to sign with them and deal with the nickel & dimeing that came with them. Once I realized, I switched to Sprint in a heartbeat and haven't looked back. I get that 10+ years is truly loyal...but am I less loyal?

For my part, I don't intend to jump. My wife doesn't upgrade her phone ever and I was planning on getting the Evo in a couple weeks anyway, so I was going to deal with the extra 10. Now, I'll just keep it and wear the crap out of it for a couple years.

So once I get 10 years of loyalty to Sprint, will I be moved to Gold status?

Need learn about churn, every carrier will tell you that is their biggest fear, which AT&T will soon be dealing with. They would rather have one long time customer than three or four two year ones...the long time customer will bring them more than the four floaters the majority of time. Hence the concentration on improving customer service.
