It got better with emui 5. Emui wasn't liked by many people so they had to changed it.

Well it was polarizing. Some loved it, some hated it. They caved and gave a more closer to stock interface

I never used EMUI 4.1, only 5. I really like it personally. But I have nothing else to compare it too.

You can downgrade to emui 4.1 if so desired to take a look at it.

Of course that was ditched with 5.

The overlay actually doesn't matter to me because I can't do without Nova Prime on my phones.
I keep a very spartan single home screen anyway with few to no widgets.

That's what I may still do at some point. I'm in the process of moving and that means I've got to unpack my computer and it's put up in a box somewhere right now so it will be a week or so before I'm set up and ready to give it a try.

For me emui 4.1 was fine... Just throw in the app drawer and notification option

I've just never been the biggest fan of regular Android as I find it to be rather choppy and laggy. EMUI is neither of those for some reason. I have to assume the EMUI skin is extremely optimized in a way to be much better than most other Android skins are.
