It was going to be a good day.
I was making a trip across a couple states to go see a friend. I decided to drive instead of fly, just for the experience. I also thought it would be great to use the HD camera on my new Evo 4g phone that I had just bought two days prior.
When I had picked up the phone at Best Buy, the guy suggested I get a case for it.
?A case is great to protect your phone, in case you drop it or anything,? he told me, saying I could never be too safe. I told him I?m pretty careful with my phones, so I?ll pass on the case.
On the second day of my trip, as I was driving down the interstate, I saw something worthy of being recorded.
The sky was dark in the distance and the contrast of dark clouds and ones illuminated gold by the nearby sun was a sight to see.
This would be a perfect for some pictures with the new phone! I thought. I exited the interstate and pulled to the side of the road.
I hopped out of the car and the wind whipped my hair.
Storms coming fast, I thought.
I saw an overpass about hundred feet to my right that would be perfect to shoot from. It looked out over the interstate, which was clear of trees and the sky stretched out to the horizon. I walked over to it and looked at the clouds. Perfect.
I got out the phone, and clicked on the camera.
The cars whipped by me on the interstate below, as I heard a faint rumble come from the darker clouds in the distance.
I turned the camera around, wanting to have a high quality shot with myself in the picture, instead of using the lower pixel front camera.
Now anyone that has ever had an Evo knows that it?s about impossible to have the phone turned around and be able to hit that capacitive button on the screen without looking at it, to take a picture. I was fumbling trying to hit the button, awkwardly holding the phone, and trying to smile, when it slipped from my hand.
I quickly tried grabbing it with my other hand, but was too late.
The phone hit the side railing of the overpass and bounced up over the interstate.
My eyes widened as I saw it tumble in the air, then fall straight down like a dead bird. I watched as it landed on the back of a semi-truck racing by on the interstate below.
The semi zoomed forward with my phone on its roof.
I stared at the distancing truck in disbelief. For a second I didn?t move. The next second, I bolted to my car and sped off after the semi.
I flew onto the interstate and pressed the pedal down, straining my little Honda?s engine. I hoped to catch the semi before my precious new phone fell off and was damaged any more.
A couple minutes later I saw the truck, like a beacon light gleaming to a distant ship.
Hope swelled up in my chest, telling me that it?s still possible to get my phone back.
I caught up to the truck and found I couldn?t see if the phone was on top of it or not.
I pulled to the side of the truck and motioned to the driver.
He had a pudgy face that sat plump on his shoulders, bypassing any neck. An equally plump hand put a sandwich to his mouth. A little green hat sat atop his head. The driver was oblivious to my wavings. I honked a few times, but to no avail.
Then I saw a turn signal go on as the truck swerved into the exit lane.
Oh what sweet luck, I thought. He?s getting off the exit!
The truck went into the exit lane and turned on the road. I followed behind as it pulled into a truck stop right off the exit. It stopped in a space among a bevy of other trucks.
I stopped behind it.
The door opened and the driver stuck out a pudgy little leg, followed by a huge belly, and then his pudgy head with the little green hat.
He hopped to the ground. He must have been no more than 5 foot 2. And with the tiny, green hat on his head, he looked just like a little leprechaun. He stood next to his truck and continued to eat his sandwich.
I jumped out of the car and walked up to him.
?Scuse me.? I started.
He looked over at me.
?I know this is going to sound weird, but I think my phone is on top of your truck.?
He looked at me like I was a lunatic.
?Yer phone?? he said.
?Yeah? I laughed.
?I know it?s weird,? I continued, ?but it fell out of my hands on an overpass and landed on your truck. I just need to climb up and see if it?s still there.?
He eyed me, suspiciously.
?Aint no one climbs on my truck but me,? he stated.
A little puzzled at his reaction I said, ?it?ll only take a second, if I could just look and-?
?Aint no one gets on my truck but me? he said again, his mouth full.
I shook my head in agitation.
?Well, can you climb up and look for me real quick?? I asked, doubting that he could even get high enough to take a peek.
?Nope.? He said.
?Why not?? My patience was starting to wear thin.
?Cause,? he said, ?I?m ?bout to eat my lunch.? He motioned to the truck stop restaurant with his head.
I looked at the remainder of sandwich still in his hand.
?You can?t just do it real quick, before you ? eat?? I asked.
?Nope. Gotta have my lunch,? he told me as he stuffed the rest of the sandwich in his mouth, ?I?ll do it after.?
And with that he turned and wobbled toward the restaurant.
I stood there, looking at the little leprechaun of a man, his backside waving at me with each step.
?Well, screw him.? I thought.
I glanced up at the top of the truck.
God I hope it?s still there, I thought.
I went around and jumped on the back, grabbed the top of the trailer and pulled myself up and looked.
There it was, sitting right in the middle on top of the truck trailer. And in one piece. My beautiful new phone.
I couldn?t help but give a giant smile and pulled myself up in one heave to the top. I stood up on the trailer, walked over to the phone and picked it up. Miraculously the only damage was a few scuffs marks and dents on the back and side of the phone where it must have hit the railing and truck on the fall. I clicked the power button. The face of the phone shined out to me as it said 1 missed call.
I unlocked the phone and pulled down the screen.
A number came up.
I called it.
?Hello??
I smiled and hit end call.
The phone still worked.
I felt elated at my luck.
?WOOOO!? I yelled as I jumped up and threw my arms in the air.
A couple truckers nearby looked over at me.
?HEY!?
A loud yell penetrated my happy thoughts.
I looked over to see the leprechaun man wobbling fast toward me and the
truck, his pudgy face red and scowling.
?GET OFF MY TRUCK!? he yelled.
I smiled, still feeling euphoric on my great luck with the phone.
?Found it!? I said, smiling, holding it up for him to see.
?GET OFF MY TRUCK!? he yelled again, enraged.
I stuffed the phone in my pocket, scrambled down the back of truck and hopped in my car.
As I pulled the car around, I waved to the leprechaun man and smiled. He gave me a pudgy middle finger. I laughed and I sped away.
Driving down the interstate, I pulled my phone out of my pocket. I looked at it again, and rubbed my fingers across the dents as the screen glowed warmly. I plugged it into the charger, and smiled.
I had my phone back.
It was going to be a good day.
