So it's 6 in the morning now, I can hardly see, my head is pounding, and I can't for the life of me backup my current rom before I load thunder. LG Optimus V9 Sprint, have rooted, have ROM Manager, Super User, CacheMate, MinFreeMan. I'm ready to use Flash_Image to load the thunder but I'd like to have a backup of my current ROM however, when I click the backup current rom in "rom manager"... type filename.... select ok.... booom black screen white LG ICON & I have to remove battery to boot again. What the flying frigg!? AND NO, I don't have the update that rolled out Feb 7th. Also I should mention, after installing "rom manager" when trying to backup my rom it asked to "confirm phone model" and the list had some phones... one was a "geeksphone one", well I couldn't get past this menu or find my phone in the list so I went with the "blaze*, other" option. Thanks much, XOXO

Rom Manager doesn't support the Optimus yet. (Thus you could not find it in the drop-down menu) Follow the directions in the OP to flash this custom recovery and then when you boot into recovery you can backup your current rom.

install-recovery.sh bummer blues

I would but install-recovery.sh doesn't exist, is this ok? Should I just continue with the steps to reboot recovery? See attached image.

I'm trying to install the custom recovery. I run this command...
# cat /sdcard/flash_image > /system/bin/flash_image
and I get this
/sdcard/flash_image: No such file or directory
---
I have the flash_image in the root of my sdcard... what am I missing?

It says the same....

/sdcard/flash_image: No such file or directory

What was that supposed to do?

Sounds like it's not been copied to your sdcard...

(could push it via adb... assuming you're in the directory where flash_image was extracted, and you have adb in your path type the following at a cmd prompt and push it to the sdcard root)

adb push flash_image /sdcard/flash_image

I returned to stock, then used LG Update Tool to install VC Update. Then I followed the guide to root on VC. Everything went perfect and I got my # during. Now when I try to flash custom recovery and I start my shell I get $ and if I try su I get access denied.

Edit: Nevermind, I had installed SuperUser but never saw it pop up to give permission. Now I have my #. Sorry

I've got the flash_image on my sdcard root already.. what is [cat] supposed to do? Can I skip that step or is it needed?

flash_image & recovery-RA-GNM-thunderc-s-1.1.0.img extracted & on SD
all steps worked fine until this:
# mv /system/etc/install-recovery.sh /system/etc/install-recovery.sh.bak

...and get this....
failed on 'mv /system/etc/install-recovery.sh /system/etc/install-recovery.sh.bak' - No such file or directory exists

I'm guessing the install-recovery.sh is missing?

Any ideas?
Thanks

You can keep going just ignore that error. When the phone first came out it had that file since the updates that file has been removed. All it would do anyways is not allow the recovery to stick and you would just have to issue the commands again but that shouldn't happen.

Thats so it will actually copy the flash_image file to system/bin where it needs to be to flash. If nothing else get root explorer and give permission then copy&paste it into /system/bin. Then skip the cat command

It's not missing. The whole point of that step us to rename the file from .sh to .sh.bak. You're getting the error because it can't find the .sh file anymore.

Try starting from the step after that and you should be all set.
