Day old S20 already showing battery degradation?

Well its been a month since I've had my phone and the rated capacity has gone up from 93% to 98% by operating between 20%-90% charge. However, i still find the battrry to still be quite disappointing as it seems to drop easily just doing simple web browsing and typing(such as this very comment).

Hate to say it but Samsung batteries are just not good imo and I am thinking very seriously of going with the iPhone 12 when it releases. I hardly used my S20 at all yesterday, instead used my S9+ for video streaming and gaming. Yet the S20 STILL went from 90% to 21% in about 14 hours. I put it in safe mode today to see if any installed apps might have been the culprit--nope. The only conclusion I can draw now is Samsung batteries still aren't good.

Ciao Samsung. Great phones, terrible batteries.

Don't forget there are other Android phones than just Samsung. I know battery life isn't the only factor to consider, but my LG V60 has had the best battery life of an phone I've owned by far.

Yeah i thought about maybe giving OnePlus a look,.but i think now is a good time for me to check what iPhone brings to the table now.

Re: Trying to preserve battery health and longevity

Wonder if he has his phone sync with some other devices?

I had it paired with my galaxy watch active 2 for bit, but the battery drain was even more atrocious with that. So I unpaired the devices and quit doing Bluetooth anything with this phone.

Bluetooth is not gonna do a battery drain.
Like sync it with another computer.
Where it sync contacts, email and stuff.

I feel you must have a app causing you problems.
Maybe Mike and somebody else might know more.

I have to agree, it's highly unlikely that Bluetooth is causing the drain. It's way more likely to be an app or rogue service causing battery drain.

Losing close to 10%/hour even in safe mode. Moderate web browsing and that's about it. I probably should have took this thing back the day I found out the battery wasn't at full rated capacity. If I watch any streaming services that goes to almoat 14% drop per hour.

Do you have AOD on?

I don't think your battery was ever at reduced capacity based on Accubattery. You even reported that the battery capacity improved over time. My advice If you are still using Accubattery is to get rid of it because it's a battery hog and checking it constantly doesn't help. Watching a streaming service for an hour will cause a significant drop. Check your device battery usage stats and see what it shows is using all your power?

I have an S20+. And the firmware reports 4,370 capacity which is the guaranteed minimum capacity. Not the reported capacity comes from the phone firmware NOT the app. The estimated actual capacity comes from the app. The capacity the manufacturers advertise is the "average" capacity. Also I've used Accubattery for a couple months now and it reports 94% health, this doesn't mean my battery actually has the advertised 4,500 mah capacity. The health is based on the phone accurately measuring the exact charging current of the charger which isn't a perfect measurement.

Generally these battery apps are good for measuring the RELATIVE change in the health of your battery over a long period of time, or, checking the battery health when you purchase a refurb/used phone. For new phones, anything 92% on up in my opinion is an indication the battery is good and essentially in like-new condition. On renewed/used phones, that are 1-3 years old, I think anything at about 85% up shows the battery is still pretty good. It's when you start to dip below 75% is it probably a reliable sign you probably could benefit from switching to a newer phone/battery.

Also, it is not uncommon when a phone is brand new or after installing some new apps, your battery usage can temporarily jump for a day or two. The most important stat to look at in Accubattery is the current (not average) Screen Off Dishcharge rate in % per hour. If it's around 1% or lower, then you don't have a lot of apps doing stuff in the background to eat battery. If it's like 2% or more, then go into Settings > Device care > Battery > Battery Usage and look at what apps are using a lot of battery that have more background time than foreground. Those are what's eating your battery and you need to see if there are settings in the app to minimize background usage, or make sure they are not excluded from the Optimize Battery Apps list (some apps have to operate all the time in the background though.)

It is a brand new device.

If you bought it from the Walmart Marketplace online, it's just like the Amazon Marketplace, full of third party scammers... and it's very likely it was used. If you bought it DIRECTLY from Walmart, either in-store or SOLD AND SHIPPED by Walmart, then you got it new. It's harder to get new than folks think anymore
