FWIW, I read somewhere not long ago that it actually takes more power to produce a black screen than a white one... has something to do with how LCD displays work.

While true for LCD displays, it's the exact opposite for AMOLED which is what Samsung uses. With AMOLED, to create black, they simply don't energize those pixels. That's why people say AMOLED displays have "inky black" blacks for color. Those pixels are left off. AMOLED can also only light up the pixels in areas that are needed vs. the entire screen like LCD has to. Both Samsung and Motorola use this to their advantage for on screen notifications while the display is off and it doesn't kill your battery.

I have the samsung galaxy s4 and it has a white screen that I would love to make black.
