Discussion For - Root, Recovery, ROM without touching a computer

well can anyone make a video on this cuz threw out the whole thing it says file doesnt exist and then the last three steps say not prmited

this is pretty awesome...kind of a related question...is there a similar non-computer method to revert the phone to stock and un-root the device for the noobs like myself?

i mean i feel like i have read a lot of the tutorials related to rooting/recovery/ROMing as well as the the un-root thread over and over and just feel overwhelmed by the language and using ADK and i'm terrified of bricking my phone lol.

Testament to the Simplicity of this Guide
1) First ever Android Phone/Data Plan
2) Never used apps - no market, no e-mail, no exp even w/ keyboard
3) Phone arrived yesterday at noon
4) Finished root/recovery/NANDROID/ROM in 1 hour or so today
5) Looked like a genius - A friend w/ rooted EVO didn't even know it was possible w/o a computer

Cheers!

Read the OP (original post) and read again, your phone is no different than the other 500 phones that used this z4root app and recovery flash. It works, its proven over and over again. The nervousness and excitement of rooting can/will easily create operator errors :-[ I know because it has happened to me and just about everyone in these forums the first time they rooted...

somebody should post a link for a video or something because i keep getting hung up on this line:
cat /sdcard/flash_image > /system/bin/flash_image
i have tried typing a few different ways and nothing works. keep getting "read only file" error...

Can we use ES File Explorer instead of Astro?

Yeah absolutely. Any file explorer will work for the moving of files but the reason i suggest using Astro is because of the "enable downloads" step to allow you to download z4root. The stock browser will not download apk files or zip files until you either ...
a) Download astro and check mark "enabled browser downloads"
b) Use a 3rd party browser such as dolphin to download any zips/apk's ect.

alright so i've been having trouble getting custom recovery to work for a while now first i tried the computer way a couple times and now i tried this but no matter which way i try it when i try to reboot into recover i just get the lg logo and nothing elas, but if i pull the battery and use the vol down + home + power the screen is just black. A while ago i downloaded rom manager but i didn't really know what i was doing so i downloaded a custom recovery for some other phone so i think that it probably isn't being overwritten for some reason. Do i have to delete it from the memory card or something or i have a different blank sd card do you think it would work if i tried this again but on the blank card or is there something completley different that i need to do?

After creating the Recovery Boot, cay you delete the files used to create it from the SD?

Yep - once you have the custom recovery flashed, you don't need to keep the download on your SD card.

Might want to save it somewhere just in case you had to RMA your phone though.

Don't forget to "nandroid backup" before doing any other tweaking.

Thank you

I'm a complete noob at this. I am aamzed at how easy it was to follow the directiond step-by-step and now I'm rooted and running ThundeROM. Thank you so much guys. I'm still learning, but this was a very easy first step.:)

when i open flash_image i get another flash_image not recovery-RA-GNM-thunderc-s-1.1.0. :/ what im suposed to do ? open recovery-RA-GNM-thunderc-s-1.1.0.img.zip and put recovery-RA-GNM-thunderc-s-1.1.0. on the root of my sd card ? and do the same thing with flash_image?

Open both zip files and copy them to the root of the SD. It looks worded wrong at that part and threw me off too.

AH Ha, Thanks KS, Now I understand why I could dl on my wifes phone and not mine.
:)

huh? a thread to discuss a thread... lol..

Yes, this is the way android central is doing it from now on. The thread to perform the task of rooting gets so messy and out of control it confuses new users and can be intimidating.

This keeps it simple and clean and provides a more user friendly environment :)

I totally understand it just seemed funny at the time lol
