Do I need to use a screen protector with Gorilla Glass? (answer inside)

I just use the plastic that came on the phone when I bought it... just had to peel up the edges and cut a bit off

I don't like screen protectors but they can save your phone. Here's a recent, true story that should give people some idea what can happen.

My older son, who's a senior in college, had his Fascinate face up on his desk. One of his room mates picked up his watch, which was also on the desk, and accidentally dropped it on the Fascinate from about a foot above the phone. The watch is a mid-sized stainless-cased watch on a fabric strap - so, not a lot of weight but not a plastic watch, either. It cracked and spider-webbed the screen; I ended up successfully replacing the screen.

It had a VZW screen protector on it, which didn't do anything to protect it from that accident. I don't really like the Zagg/IS protectors, but all our touchscreen phones now have those because I believe that they would attenuate an impact much better than nothing at all or the thin, relatively rigid type of protector.

So it sounds like the "gorilla glass" from corning is nothing special if it cant take an impact like that im not to confident in it. I still use a screen protector I think my finger glides easier over the screen and it gives me some piece of mind.

That was why I posted. Gorilla glass clearly isn't "bullet-proof." Cracked screens mean either a pretty expensive and very fiddly repair or a replacement of the phone. :(

I use a screen saver cause of finger prints and streaks from my fingers..
seems they are always oiled up... (dont even try to go there, its just my way of saying all fingers leave corrisive streaks .. ) just like a gun barrel,, touch it and dont clean it and in a few months that touch will be imprinted as one of yer biggest blunders.

Jampot can correct my spelling.. lol

I took an old Fruit of the Loom t-shirt and cut a piece out of it to use to clean my screen. Works great for an obsessive person like me.

Just ordered a couple of the invisibleshields myself, and even got a 20% discount using the code "zagg20" at checkout!

An old thread, but wanted to bump it to share with everyone that this discount is still working. I just bought a (Thunderbolt) screen protector from Zagg for $14.99 plus $2.99 USPS First Class rate. The total was $17.98 minus 20% for a total of $14.98 paid via PayPal.

If you touch-type letter by letter then the original plastic works fine until it (if it) later begins to peel off, but if you Swype or do anything that requires sliding fingers across the screen or keypad then a Zagg or other aftermarket film protector makes a big difference with its slicker surface.
