Do you use NFC? Would you trade?

To be completely honest I want to use it but I think I'm not doing it properly or there just aren't enough devices that support this technology. Also if it was up to me I rathet have updated technology like a snap dragon or tegra processor.

I'm talking my phone smart guy. If you read my post you'd know that

You sure showed me.

Isn't this a Nexus 7 forum anyways? I can see where the confusion comes in. I was thinking you meant the N7 as well. Any who, no reason to devolve into name calling, methinks.

Now, back on topic, I see what a lot of people mean, saying trying to come up with a solution to a problem that doesn't exist. Honestly, I think it's might convenient to share data between my devices ( before I had NFC, I was emailing links to myself to look at them on different screens), although, I'd like something a bit more elegant/automatic. Something like: a button in YouTube that let's me change the device on which I'm watching the video. Simple, but effective, and I don't have to worry about turning on my NFC chip.

I much prefer the NFC method besides emailing myself, but I think there's still room for improvement.

I use it a lot with Google wallet. I'm at a place that supports it I use it. Easier than taking out you wallet.

I don't understand this. Can someone explain what I'm missing? How is taking out a device easier than taking out a wallet? Where are you carrying your Nexus7, or phone, that it's easier to take out than the wallet in your pocket? Or maybe you're not carrying your wallet in your pocket??? I don't know. Where is the added convenience? Carrying ID is pretty important so I'm not seeing how allowing for not carrying a card is that much of an improvement either.

You're forgetting the security aspect of it. Using Google Wallet over using a physical card has the following advantages.

* No card skimming
* No over-the-shoulder pics of victim's cards
* Less grab-and-run card theft
* Device security to reduce/prevent unauthorized use
* Remote lock and wipe in the event that your phone is lost/stolen

I use Google Wallet daily. And on top of the security aspects, it truly is faster. I unlock Google Wallet while I'm waiting in line or walking to the register. One quick tap while they're still ringing up and my phone is back in my pocket before the receipt is even printed.

In regards to the original topic, I wouldn't trade NFC for any feature. I use it all the time for various functions.

Agree with you 100%. Guy at Bucky's keeps telling me test app is dangerous. I ask how and he never answers.

A lot easier and safer then carrying the card. I just wish everyone supported it

Ive never used NFC. I wouldnt be opposed to it, but I dont know where its accepted and what am i supposed to do walk into lets say walmart with my tablet just to make a payment? I see it as being more useful on a phone. As for expandable memory, i agree with one of the first commenters on this post, I try to buy phones with enough memory so i dont have to worry about all that.

Totally agree. I can't see myself taking the Nexus 7 out and about just to pay for things.

I carry a man-bag that has my tablet in it about 99% of the time (unless I'm at work where they're prohibited). I'm not the only one out there that takes his tablet with him places, either. I've seen quite a few posts where people have their tablets with them when they go out, and can easily use it in just such a case. It's not necessarily that we take it with us JUST to use it for pay, but it just so happens that we have it with us and can use it to pay.

I agree that using NFC for payments makes more sense with a phone than a tablet. While we are still likely to carry a wallet even if using something like Google Wallet, if NFC becomes commonplace enough, it might be possible to not bother carrying multiple credit/debit cards, at which point it's a space & weight savings.

I personally could see the usefulness of Beam if my next phone has NFC, or if my wife gets a N7 or other tablet. I don't think NFC takes up much space, adds much weight, or adds much cost, so I don't really see a reason not to have it.

I think that as far as payments go, the real power of NFC will come when more businesses start using it for things like gift and loyalty cards. You won't have to carry a bunch of store and gift cards that you rarely use but they'll be available whenever you need them. I know that I frequently end up somewhere that I have a gift card for but I don't carry the card with me unless I was already planning to go there. The Starbucks app actually made this very easy. I rarely go to Starbucks, but I was given a gift card a while ago, and if it wasn't for the phone app, I would've never had it on me when I ended up at Starbucks.

I'd only trade NFC for a GSM chip to make cellular phone calls and cellular data.

I do use NFC. Heck, just 40 minutes ago I paired an NFC Bluetooth headset and sent 2 YouTube videos to another device. I would love to use NFC for payment but am finding few places that support it...

I wish more places accepted NFC... No fumbling around with your wallet, looking for change, swiping a card, etc. Just tap and go.

I'd love to give a go at using my Nexus 7 to pay for things using Google wallet, but... Would I not need Internet connection for that? I always assumed NFC payments would be much more convenient on a phone. Unfortunately I own a DROID X... So yeah... That's not gonna happen for me.
But anyway like I said.. Would you need Internet connection? Maybe a dumb question? Idk.

No, you don't need an internet connection to use NFC for paying, only for adding your payment method (and possibly for syncing things like your current balance). In terms of paying, think of your NFC device like a substitute for a regular credit card, which doesn't need an internet connection. Just like with a credit card, it just signals to the reader that you actually have the card. The reader then handles the communications on its end.

O really? Wow. I'm gonna have to give it a shot next time I have a chance. I would like to assume best buy accepts nfc payments.

Best Buy, McDonalads, Starbucks, and a few other places. They have those special MasterCard pay pass machines. If you see that machine, you can make an NFC payment.

I use it all the time, its great for transferring files between my Galaxy Nexus and N7 as well as between friends Nexus S and Galaxy S3's! Far simpler than pairing via Bluetooth!

We can't use Google Wallet yet in Europe but after getting my GS III a couple weeks ago I ordered some NFC stickers. They do come in handy, especially when they're set up as toggle switches. One on the nightstand to turn off notifications and lower ringer volume, then return volume settings in the morning. Another in the car to turn on and off bluetooth and another stuck to the back of my wifi-only tablet to toggle on and off the phone's wifi hotspot.

On the other hand, the only practical use I see for it on a tablet is file transfers.

I use NFC on my Galaxy Nexus all the time, my University has NFC paypass on all the vending machines, and i use it to beam phone numbers, youtube, and other various things to other people or my Nexus 7. I dont use it a whole lot on my Nexus 7, but i cant really think of anything that i would rather replace it with. I think in a couple of years NFC will become a bigger deal when more companies learn what it is and make use of it. I imagine in a few years hotel door keys, store loyalty cards and many things will start using NFC. Heck i just now remembered that my office uses NFC cards to unlock the doors, bet i can hook my phone up to do that instead of using the card.

I was just reading an article saying that the iphone 5 won't have nfc available on it. That got me to thinking, I know the nexus 7 has nfc but I never ever use it. I was wondering how many of you guys and girls out there actually use NFC on your nexus 7s. And I also wanted to ask... Would u trade NFC, for expandable memory.. Or some other feature..? If so, what? Just throwing questions that I think might make for an interesting discussion.

NFC on a wifi only device is near useless. NFC on a phone is great (google wallet - I use it all the time). If you tried to pay for something in a store using Google Wallet on a wifi device (and had no wifi there), you can't. Google Wallet needs a data connection.

So in a wifi only device, I'd prefer more RAM or HD space.

Totally incorrect. First off, there are more uses for NFC than mobile payments. Second, you surely can make mobile payments without a data connection. It authenticates with the data sent by the NFC chip. Just like a Visa with a built-in chip which definitely doesn't have a data connection.

I like NFC. I use Google Wallet, luckily there are quite a few places in my area that take it, and NFC tags. I have a tag in my house that turns on wifi, puts the vol at max, and turns off gps. One in my car that turns off wifi, turns on gps, and launches Amazon MP3 player. Then one at work to turn on wifi and lower vol to 1, then when i go back outside I hit it again and it turns wifi off, and puts the vol to max. Once I got used to the tags they actually are nice. Its faster than changing the settings one by one and it works through the Otterbox Defender case too.
