Does the S8/S8+ Use Qualcomm's Quick Charge 3.0 or 4.0

Hi,

I'm getting fast charging notification but Ampere doesn't read above 1040 (screen on). Has anyone got any results, and what they'd expect to get in an ideal world?

Just wanted to note there's a post on the samsung forums on charging https://us.community.samsung.com/t5...swers/S8-charging-very-slowly/m-p/98577#M2179

Top of pg3 you can see a mod has added it to their tracker
I have tried 6 different chargers including the stock charger and can not pull over 1020 ma according to Ampere.

So if I get a QC3.0 fast charging power block, it won't harm my phone if the phone is only QC2.0? Sorry for the noob question, new to this.

I haven't gotten to do any extended testing. I will do that testing yet. I will try some testing taking the phone from 20-50% with the QC2, Samsung and USB-PD chargers. That'll take some time to do and I won't be able to do it until likely tomorrow some time.
Did you ever do any testing?

Base on the s7 case and also official website mentioned the mobile charger support QC 2.0. Unfortunately, I strongly believe s8 plus only support up to QC2.0. Hope my prediction got wrong.

Here is my chat transcript with Samsung support. All I did was go to samsung.com.

The rep said the S8 supports 3.0

Info: Thank you for choosing to chat with us. An agent will be with you shortly.
Info: You are now chatting with Nadeem P.
Nadeem P: Hi, thank you for reaching out to Samsung Technical Support. How may I assist you?
You: hi, what qualcomm charging spec does my S8+ support?
You: qc 2.0 or 3.0 or 4.0?
Nadeem P: I see that you want to know what Qualcomm charging specifications support your S8+ phone. I'll be glad to assist you.
You: thanks
Nadeem P: Let me check the details for you.
Nadeem P: You're welcome.
You: the website only says "adaptive fast charging" but the 835 chip is capable of 4.0
Nadeem P: It supports 3.0 Qc.

I could be wrong but just because the processor supports QC 3.0 or the 835 supports 4.0, it comes to whether the phone manufacturer packages the supporting chips to support QC 3.0 or 4.0.

Doing a little searching I think for QC 3.0 support you also have to have the Qualcomm SMB1350 or SMB1351 PMIC chip. The LG G5 clearly shows QC 3.0 support on the Qualcomm site and they do have one of those PMIC chips along with the processor.

So what this means is that while your friends with their other SnapDragon 835 phones are zooming past us doing QC3.0 and QC4.0 (when available), we'll essentially be stuck "in the slow lane" with our Samsung S8s? Bad Samsung! Time to look up what the return period is and if a class action lawsuit is possible to get them to "ungimp" the SnapDragon 835.

Ask yourself if a free Gear VR or other "free" accessories will be worth the pain of being stuck with a slower phone for a year or more, even when it is the "flagship" of a billion dollar company...

Supposedly the Samsung S8 has a 3 month return policy. It might just be time to use it if we don't hear a positive response from their engineers... (I've attempted to contact them through social media, email, and phone about this. They are essentially telling me it was never an "advertised feature". Vote with your wallet.)

Slow lane? I don't think my phone is slow at charging ;).

Na doubtful. It charges plenty fast. QC 2.0 to 3.0 really isn't that big of a bump.

Interesting... I guess there's nothing more to be said until QC 4.0 charges come out and someone can test. Maybe the SnapDragon 835 will just work with it, maybe there's mystery bits in mystery drivers that have to be set to "allow" it. (Assuming it's not a PMIC thing as mentioned above. Maybe if someone can find the MAX77829 in another phone that does claim QC4.0 support and not just AFC?) Oh the joys of closed source chips! Guess-n-test!

I can say .. I have never once chose my phone on how fast it charges lol. I mean I get you're concerned but I am definitely not going to jump phones solely based on one having QC 2.0 and one having 3.0 or 4.0 -- that isn't the selling point for me when buying phones :P.

I certainly hope 4.0 will eventually be allowed with the note 8's 3300 battery.
