DROID BIONIC Jelly Bean Update

Thanks so much for that link! I just tried again after the first time and it worked perfect. I got my root back and I'm very very happy. Thanks so much for taking care of us all.

My pleasure. Glad you got it working again.

I was doing great with the Linux thing until out said to ensure my Bionic was connected via wifi.

I've found no way to connect my bionic to the Linux box via wifi. Bionic wifi doesn't see the Linux wifi. I even setup an add-hoc network on the Linux wireless adaptor but bionic wifi doesn't see it. There's no home wifi network to use here, soooo

Yes, see what Mike is talking about. BUT, please flash the system.img from 98.72.22 FXZ BEFORE you try it to clean up any root remnants. That goes for anyone with "leftover root crap" in system.

Boot to AP Fastboot (Power off, hold volume down and press volume), connect to USB, then:

fastboot flash system system.img

Make sure it's the right system.img. fastboot is in the HoB utils dir if you need it.

Alternatively you can use the HoB 10.1 with the 98.72.22 FXZ and do a FXZ Keep Data (DO NOT try to root from the HoB if you're on JB)

Then use the Linux based exploit.

Sam,

Finally got around to doing a fresh fxz (not keeping data, didn't care about keeping data really) using HoB 10.1. Went very smoothly. Then ran the linux-based root exploit. Also ran smoothly. Now on fresh JB install with root, and very happy. Thanks much, could not have done this without you :)

I have the same problem. Tried public wifi to no avail. Can't get any help so I gave up. Been checking on Ebay for a unlocked phone

Why are you giving up? There are plenty of people around here who can help.

I'm still willing to help but I need specific questions and problems. General statements like "I can't get wifi to work" doesn't give me anything to work with so I ignore it. But if you want to detail what you've tried, your network setup, and exactly what kind of error you're getting, I'll take a stab at it.

Well, it has taken me a while to regain root after FXZ'ing because of the dread Encryption Corrupt (or whatever it said) screen. I was too impatient to wait for HoB and spent more time than I wanted just to get a working phone back.

Being a total Ubuntu noob, I tried everything I could find to perform the exploit EXCEPT verify that I had a good USB cable and that the drivers were installed on my PC (my son deleted them because they were interfering with his phone GRRRR). So after breaking out the factory data cable, charging the battery to 100 percent, and getting everything talking again, here is what I found:

1. Live CD (Ubuntu 12.1) worked fine. Just booted up to the CD (with the PC plugged into routervia cable and phone connected to router wifi) and followed everything Dan said. Rooted first time through with no problem.

2. Before that, after replacing drivers and cable, tried VMplayer. Mounted as a VM, Ubuntu was pretty slick but could not connect phone to share. I'm pretty sure it is a router issue as the IP when using the disk is different than using it as a VM, but I'm not savvy enough to troubleshoot (plus the patience thing coupled with a touch of ADD doesn't help)..

So to make a long story short, the Live CD running from the disk works like a charm as long as you have a good cable and your router allows you to do the share.

Now that I have root again, I don't wanna mess anything up. I've reinstalled CWM and want to make a backup but that appears to be what messed me up to start with. What do any of you think I should do? And THANKS for all of the great info!

Well, any idea how i can successfully connect to the Samba share and root this phone? I got thru all the steps til I go to remote storage, enter info and it says unable to connect, there is a problem with your network connection, try again.
I am running wireless internet on my laptop and connected to it as well on the phone.

Memory management seems to be better under JB than under ICS. I've been using Fast Reboot on this Bionic since the GB era, when I would routinely see numbers on the order of 80 MB of memory freed. Under ICS that number rose typically to somewhere around 200 MB. Now, under JB, I'm seeing numbers from as low as 80 to (rarely) as much as 120 MB, indicating that the OS is doing a better job of freeing memory on its own. My guess is that a significant piece of the performance improvements under "Project Butter" is tied up in that phenomenon, freeing RAM to take on the next task.

At first I thought there were no major differences in how my phone functioned after the update, but that pretty quickly changed. Multiple apps crash, sluggish shifting from one screen to another, it is slow to 'wake up' when I press the power button. A few times I've seen a pop up error type message about gui exception...something, something. It goes away within a couple seconds, so I've not been able to catch the whole message. I've cleared the cache on any apps. Any suggestions? BTW, I'm not rooted.

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO. I've said this SO many times now. Bootstrap recovery is NOT compatible with JB. If you want to find yourself back at square 1 with the encryption error, then that's fine, but, otherwise DO NOT use it!!

Did you check the ip address on the phone? Does it match the subnet of the laptop? If you open a terminal on the phone, can you ping the ip address of the laptop? Without details it's very difficult for someone to help troubleshoot the actual problem. And that's why I haven't tried.

The suggestion that no one ever likes and everyone who has a phone that isn't working right always spends more time avoiding than doing. FDR. Give it a clean start.

P.S. Those looking to I/O next month for major announcements from Moogle are going to be HIGHLY disappointed. No KLP. No high end phones. You'll see the Ghost mid-range phone with 4.2.2 announced for a summer release. That's about it. I had low expectations for the past few months anyway about I/O....I've lowered them even further now.

Sam

A little off-topic and probably a long-shot, but any indication that Google may introduce an Android-based line of devices to rival the iPod at I/O since that's one market that is sorely lacking in Android devices? Samsung seems to have quietly retired their Galaxy players.

I SERIOUSLY doubt it.

Factory reset? Somehow I thought that might be your response. *grumble* :p I'll go in search of how that works, but in the meantime, I'll be making a list of the apps I'll need to reinstall.

I didn't even install bootstrap as I know that is what sent me down the rabbit hole to start with. So I should get rid of CWM also so I don't try and reboot into recovery when I'm drunk I guess (the ADD thing again).

Seriously, thanks for the help as always. Is there a way to backup and restore that won't mess me up that you would suggest, or just leave the sucker alone? I'm pretty happy with the moto JB and not really interested in new ROMs unless someone comes out with a really rocking one that has everything working (which I haven't played with ROMs since my HTC Magic days)

Yup. Your phone will be much happier.

CWM is bootstrap. The only thing that's safe to use is safestrap.

ahhhhhh...."I see" said the blind man. By bootstrap, I thought you meant Bionic Bootstrap which I knew was a baaaad thing. I've alays called Clockwork....well, clockwork.

I'll get rid of "the other", read up on safestrap, and stop buggin' ya :)
