DROID BIONIC Jelly Bean Update

I understand that everyone here finds the idea of switching from Android to be beyond comprehension, however, Samsung and Google realize there are many out there that look at the phone first and may not even know if a phone is Android or Tizen. Samsung is banking on this, Google doesn't want to find out! (Hardware first and OS second) Hence the cold war standoff, mutually assured distruction.:D

The average user probably doesn't care much about whether it's a Google or Samsung phone. If they really cared that much, then they'd all buy Nexus devices. What they care about is, 1) is it an iPhone? Many people will buy just because it's an iPhone, many will not for the same reason. 2) Does it get my email, surf the web, take pictures, text, and update my status. Other than those things, many people don't care about many other features. 3) Does the screen meet my needs, both size and clarity. 4) Does the salesman recommend it. 5) What is the cost. If they can fit all their needs and stay within their cost, then most people won't care if it's Tizen or Android, especially since they both look similar. And Samsung will make their phones look identical between Touchwiz on Android and Touchwiz on Tizen. Notice that a lot of the things they show off aren't "Android" features, they are features they have made or branded themselves. So, when the Tizen system comes out they aren't going to market it as "the battle against Android and Google," they will market it as the "next big thing," and most everyone who doesn't know better will buy it, because it's Samsung's new phone. Just my two cents.

Foxfi aka PdaNet+ is a must have app for me. I use it for the iPad that I have to use for work. I don't want to loose my unlimited just to add it to my plan and don't want to spend $30 a month to have it on its own data plan.

BTW what is the chance that it will work on JB when my Bionic gets the update? Or should I plan on avoiding the JB update when it arrives?

Those that have the technical expertise to give me insight into this would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Interesting comment from Eric Schmidt today at the Big Tent in India, basically confirming that Google Now is coming to iOS (if Apple approves it). For many (including me), this is the big reason to want JB. I'm sure it won't work quite as well on iOS as it does on Android, but this will definitely tempt some away from Android (or keep them on iOS).

I'm sure Apple won't like it, as it might compete with Siri. Plus, the apps they put on IOS usually aren't as good as their Android counterparts. Third, if they are releasing Google Now onto IOS, I'd bet their releasing something even cooler on Android.

I agree to a point, however, Samsung is selling phones in part due to their looks, not function, many phones can do the same things as the S3.:)

I didn't think Apple would ever approve Enhanced Voice Search or Maps on iOS, but they did. Starting to wonder if there isn't some sort of detente ongoing there between Schmidt and Cook. Apple holds the app up for awhile to make it look like they're not going to approve it, but then go ahead and do so. You can bet, though, that Now will never have hooks into non-Google apps on iOS. Seems like the next step for Google Now on Android is to start being bi-directional (more Siri like) and allow voice manipulation of apps (e.g., calendar entries, etc...) that are already being exhibited by third party apps like Dragon Mobile Assistant. Some of those features are already present, but they are spread out all over the place (Now, voice search, etc..). Put them all in one place and make it your virtual assistant.

Any one else notice Punit Soni to be very quiet lately?

Fortunately I was able to interpret these feelings correctly: loss of essence.

Google keeps saying their goal is to make it possible to talk to your phone like people on Star Trek talked to the computer. That would be awesome.

Who can blame the guy. No matter what he says or does he pisses someone off. He's doing the best he can.

Maybe it means he's sitting in some Verizon honchos office going "look, about this Bionic thing..."

I hope not. Cause VZW would sit there and go "Yea? Where the hell is it you morons..." 22 wasn't VZW's fault.

Was there an earlier build that worked? If there was how do you screw it up after it was working fine (without adding stuff during a crisis...)?

It's a long story. Just know that Moto screwed up and had to start with a new build. (Any time a build fails they have to start with a new one, so, that's not overly unusual....but, yea.....)

As I said, I got rid of stock browser completely. It's in my disabled list. I ONLY use Chrome. It syncs with all my other devices and works quite well.

Clarification request regarding stock browser - got rid of 'completely' (as in delete) or merely able to disable?

Same q regarding android os's shipping w/ chrome as stock.

NEVER, I repeat, NEVER delete a stock app. Disable ONLY. Even freezing it is better than deleting. Otherwise, when JB rolls out, you'll be FXZ'ing first to get everything back that you deleted. I plan on doing so anyway to get a fresh install, but, that's besides the point.

. . .
Google is indispensable . . . it is hard for me to imagine anyone being able to walk away from Google's ecosystem anytime in the near future.

Unfortunately, THERE is the missing competition puzzle piece.

I see, so starting from scratch every time is standard procedure. Oh well. Also, a month ago I was going to ask if we'd get to 1000 posts by the time we got JB, but I was sure it would have never happened. I guess I was wrong.
