DROID BIONIC Jelly Bean Update

Is there any good reason not to start removing bloatware? I mean, I'll never need it for upgrading to a new version, so even if we never get an FXZ, it doesn't matter...right?

ok, so Im trying to boot into recovery and I get the android lying down with the red triangle with the exclamation point. What am I doing wrong? I hold power, vol up and vol down, vol down to recovery and vol up to select. I uninstalled SS and there are posts that say ppl are doing the same thing. Sorry if this is a newb question. Thanks for any replys.

Update: Never mind.. you can all put away your flame throwers...lol I got it..

Mine if I long press the search button I don't get a keyboard popup.

It does that for me if I am in another app. At the home screen it brings up the keyboard. A slight annoyance. I wish it would work that it just opens Google now and then I click to search.

When you get to that point, press vol+ and vol- at the same time and it'll bring up the recovery menu.

Sideloading the update as we speak. Thanks to all of you so very much for all the in put and knowledge. Also thanks to those that have screwed up and posted what they did so I learn from those mistakes...lol

I thought to simply open Google Now, you swipe from the bottom up on the home screen to open it up. Is it not like that on the Bionic build?

Sooo, I may have really messed something up. I removed SS as was suggested and in superuser I enabled the OTA Update protection thing. The install went fine but now it says I do not have root, yet I still have the superuser app and can't remove it. Also, I can't get into my gallery anymore, as soon as I open it it automatically just exits out with an error message or anything - not sure if that's related.

Is there any way for me to either completely get rid of the Superuser app and go back to stock 100% unrooted or reroot it so that Superuser works the way it should again?

*EDIT* I should also mention that when I try to update the SU binary through the Superuser app it downloads it and then says it fails to gain root access.

A pre-JB version of that same question, if I may: there was a program called FlashRemoval that came with ICS, and evidently did what it sounds like. I froze it using Titanium Backup, went back and reinstalled Flash from Play Store history, and all has been well since then. More recently, I've unfrozen everything else in preparation for the OTA, and I guess I'll probably unfreeze this too at the last minute, but it's annoying to have to be Completely Bone Stock to take the OTA, then have to go back and fix what it broke.

Meanwhile, unfreezing all of that other junk (from Google, Motorola and Verizon) has slowed the phone down a lot. Once I get the upgrade installed and clean it up, it'll be difficult to figure out how much of the smoothness comes from Project Butter and how much from returning useless cruft to cold storage as I did before.

Does anyone remember the issues during the ICS update with large numbers of media files causing the update to be really slow?

Did moving your media to the SD card eliminate that problem? If needs be I can delete my music and simply re-sync. I just can't remember what I did for ICS.

You don't have to unfreeze anything I updated with webtop frozen along with 30 other system apps with no errors or problems.

Sqlite editor works for you to disable the entitlement check so you can use the stock wifi hotspot granted that you keep root through the update. Same process as before.
Yeah i never lost the hotspot when i took the ota I just hate to use it I think V is watching me so I use wifi tether instead which is working now.

So another success story. Restored root with Voodoo and reinstalled SS. Typing su in terminal changed $ to #. Confirmed root. Woot!!

If you've got a lot of media, it has to be reindexed regardless of where it's stored. I moved mine off entirely before the update so I could avoid those issues.

I sorta made my own "hack". I use ADW Launcher and used one of the gestures to open up Google Search which opens it up without the keyboard. So I set it that when I swipe up on the dock Google Search opens which is Google Now.

Well, I screwed myself and permanently lost root as a result. Hurray. Or something. And no, no one needs to worry about making the same mistake I did. I promise you, you can't.

Sorry to hear that Samuri! :(

I know how you feel right now. I want to thank you for everything you do for this community. My phone wouldn't be the half the phone it is without the services you have provided for us. The fact that you lost root because you were trying to do something that would benefit us truly shows how selfless you are. You are an awesome person and I hope everyone can recognize that! :)

Here's hoping a workaround comes soon so you can get rooted again!. :)

Updated to JellyBean successfully using stock recovery. Not sure what's going on, but the "Android Keyboard (AOSP)" is NOT the smartkeyboard touted as coming with 4.1 (e.g. that's on my galaxy nexus). It's not doing the swype-like typing but only letting me pick letters out one at a time.

Anybody having this keyboard problem???

Wow. Really good update. Feels like the phone is faster. Apps launch quicker and just much better. Also the washing machine camera icon looks better now.

:)

Using the recovery option went fine.

Update took forever.

Complaint: this is what this phone should have been at launch!

Thanks Sam for all the info.

Besides the "icon", is the camera app itself improved?

At first I couldn't get the su binaries updated, but after a fresh fxz, it finally updated. Installed the update from recovery, recovered root with Voodoo. Root checker and Voodoo said I had root, but none of my programs had root access. Another su and su binary update and a restart fixed the problem. Now that I have a working JB with root, there are some things I started to notice.
My Music is gone. I guess I can use the google play music, but the lock screen audio controls are gone! I used those all the time.. Anyone know a lightweight music app that has controls on the lock screen?

Update: The lock screen controls magically appeared again. Nevermind. I am still looking for a non-google lightweight music player though.
