DROID BIONIC Jelly Bean Update

Updated to JellyBean successfully using stock recovery. Not sure what's going on, but the "Android Keyboard (AOSP)" is NOT the smartkeyboard touted as coming with 4.1 (e.g. that's on my galaxy nexus). It's not doing the swype-like typing but only letting me pick letters out one at a time.

Anybody having this keyboard problem???

I could have sworn gesture typing was part of Android 4.2.

Any updates on the search for a JB root exploit yet? I know there are many who are looking but wasn't sure if there was anything promising in the works.

I did the update on my wife's Bionic and lost root. The only difference between what I did on mine and what I did on hers was that I did not start with a fresh FXZ with hers, otherwise I did it all the same (stock with root, protect root with Voodoo, update SuperUser and su binaries, update through stock recovery, restore with Voodoo, but root is lost). Tried what I knew and thought a FR might correct it but to no avail. :(

All the directions I've seen said to update the binaries BEFORE using Voodoo, but you listed it as if you used Voodoo and then updated the binaries. Maybe that was the problem? I'm in the process of looking over updating now, but I've seen other people talking about being able to regain root after loosing it with similar situations as yours. Maybe they'll be able to offer more insight.

Updated and looks like I retained root ok. Only problem I've noticed so far is Swype auto capitalizes the first letter of every word if the option to auto capitalize the start of a sentence is on. Also pressing the Swype option button on the lower left no longer highlights a word for quick editing. These were a couple of issues the Razr update had, but not as bad.

For the people asking about wifi issues, I'll post my results tomorrow or the next day when I get home from working on the road and can test our router.

You're correct. Gesture typing is 4.2. Bionic is 4.1.2. Same reason we didn't get Photosphere or lock screen widgets.

Appear to have root, but can't rename Superuser.APK to SU.APK to make the VZW app happy. Otherwise appear to still have root. Can't think of a safe way to test it. Titanium Backup Root makes backups. :)

For those who lost root but still have Voodoo and SuperUser...I had the same problem. I was running SafeStrap, so I had just restored to stock, uninstalled recovery, and then uninstall the SS app. I was, apparently, running an older version of SU, because when I updated the SU binaries , it was only to 3.0.3.2 or something. Anyway, I updated the binaries, ran Voodoo, and installed the JB OTA update.

From JB, SU reported that it didn't have root, so I went ahead and set up my account in the Play Store, updated the SU app, then went into SU and updated the binaries (this time it was something like 3.1.1). It said I had root, but root apps said they couldn't get it. I then went to Voodoo, temp unrooted, then restored root, rebooted and everything worked fine after that.

No idea if that will work for anyone else, but you may want to try a combination of temp unrooting (and then restoring root) with Voodoo, updating SU binaries, and rebooting after doing so. It might just need a certain sequence for you like it did for me.

Thank you Sam for everything you do. Accidentally bricked the wife's phone trying to install jb and used the hob to get it back up and running.. Lol I was in some deep trouble :) so thank you again.

Installed the update from Sams link last night. Working like a champ! Thanks! 1 minor gripe is not being able to resize the cards on the Google Now widget so it fills the entire screen. Oh and the Moto phone icon is still imo the ugliest thing ever good thing for the stock jellybean icons built into Nova :D

I notice a number of people saying they list root, which I'm assuming means they are on JB, but how are you starting over by doing a FXZ or HoB when we apparently can't go back to ICS?

Wanted to thank everyone here. I'm an Android novice but was able to download and install the update thanks to following this thread.

Besides the "icon", is the camera app itself improved?

It seems the same to me although it does seem to save the pictures faster I don't know if that's just me imagining that or if it really is better. I did not notice any new features on the camera though.

What I found was that I had to purchase the Camera JB+ app from the market to have the features/look that I was used to in CM10.1 and AOKP. .99 for an app that restores the features/look that we should've got in Jelly Bean to begin with. It also comes with the gallery as well. Personally, I think it was 99 cents well spent.

How do you tell if your in stock recovery or not? Thought I was. Went to flash and get error 7 build prop. Is there something in the build prop I can edit to fix this?

From my experience, getting error 7 means there is something missing, either bloatware that you uninstalled/froze or a file that got deleted by SafeStrap

I did the install from recovery and it was sucessful but now it stuck at the droid eye and won't get past it. Any ideas of things I can try? Thanks

Those of us with root did so by preserving root during the ICS to JB upgrade using Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper. SuperUser itself should preserve root, but I didn't want to risk relying on it as I had read that Voodoo actually worked (and it did, for me).

I may have used safe strap before but in order to get ics on my phone I had to do a full fxz. And after that all I used is titanium backup free version supersu and voodoo. So I don't understand why I would get error status 7. Build.prob bull****.
